  • CU launches national project on presidential papers of Martin Van Buren

Van Buren was architect of modern-day political campaigns, founder of Democratic Party and two-party political system

President Van Buren is the reason that Trump, Cruz, Clinton, Sanders and friends are lining up against each other today. He is the reason your Facebook wall is lighting up with red and blue. A political heavyweight for three decades in the early 19th century, Van Buren felt America could never come together unless it had national parties to which all could belong. He founded the Democratic party and served as Vice President to Andrew Jackson before being elected President himself. Yet few people know anything about him.

Cumberland University has been given access to Van Buren’s papers and will hold an event on President’s Day, February 15, during which they will unveil the first documents to be released online. The event will include appearances by several national experts on the Jacksonian Era, including Cumberland University’s Dr. Mark Cheathem who is curating the project.
