Prerequisite Course Requirements

The following specific Cumberland University courses (or the equivalent at a regionally accredited institution) are required:

  • EXSS 230 Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries (B or higher)

    Designed for prospective athletic trainers, coaches, and health and physical educators to aid in the recognition, evaluation, and care of athletic injuries. Techniques in taping, prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of injuries.

    Fee: $35.00

  • EXSS 227 Safety and First Aid (B or higher)

    A course designed to acquaint the candidate with accident causes and prevention, and methods and materials for teaching safety education in the school and community. Principles and techniques of first aid measures and accident prevention are discussed.

  • EXSS 312 Nutrition

    This course is a basic introduction to the study of nutrition. Special emphasis will be placed on the application and ramifications of nutrition in nursing, athletic training, physical education, and sport and exercise science.

  • EXSS 301 Physiology of Exercise

    This course includes the study of the physiological changes in the human body brought about by exercise. Primary emphasis is on the cardiopulmonary, neuromuscular, and various energy systems (including exercise biochemistry). This course is taken concurrently with EXSS 301L, Physiology of Exercise Lab.

  • BIO 213 Human Anatomy and Physiology I

    This course is the first semester of a detailed study of the structure and functions of the human body. Each system will be covered as an individual topic and how it relates to the other systems. Topics in this course include tissues, skin, the skeletal system, muscles, and the nervous system. Clinical applications and vocabulary will be emphasized. This course is designed for majors in biology, nursing, physical education, and Athletic Training. Three hours of lecture and one three-hour laboratory per week.

  • BIO 214 Human Anatomy and Physiology II

    This course is the second semester of a detailed study of the structure and functions of the human body. Each system will be covered as an individual topic and how it relates to the other systems. Topics in this course include the endocrine, digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems, as well as both male and female reproductive systems. Clinical applications and vocabulary will be emphasized. This course is designed for majors in biology, nursing, physical education, and athletic training. Three hours of lecture and one three-hour laboratory per week.

  • PHY201 College Physics I

    This course is an algebra-based introduction to the field of mechanics, oscillations, fluids, and thermodynamics. Three hours of lecture and one three-hour laboratory per week.

    This course is an introduction to psychological methods, theories, practice, and applications.

  • EXSS 425 Kinesiology

    This course will emphasize the application of the principles of human movement throughout the lifespan. Specific emphasis will be placed on structural anatomy, biomechanics, and physics as they apply to the human body. Candidates will learn observational and hands-on techniques to assess posture, muscular imbalances, anatomic anomalies, and inter-relationships of the kinetic chain. Several experiences will be offered in the Human Performance Laboratory

    Evaluation procedures and techniques applicable to the sport, physical education, health, sport and exercise science, recreation and leisure service profession. Emphasis on evaluation purpose and objectives, research methodology including the design, development, or selection of evaluation tools, data collection and analysis of information, results and technical report writing.

  • PSY 205 Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences

    This course covers identification, interpretation, and use of statistical data analysis methods. Topics include descriptive statistics, sampling methods, normal populations, hypothesis testing, and both relational and differential analyses.

  • CHEM 111 General Chemistry

    This course is a study of matter, measurement, modern atomic theory, stoichiometry, chemical reactions, gas laws, atomic structure, quantum theory, electron configurations and chemical bonding, the periodic table, and molecular geometry of molecules. Three hours of lecture. Students must take MATH 111 as a co-requisite for this course if they have not already successfully completed it.

  • CHEM 111L General Chemistry 1 Lab

    This course provides laboratory experiments and demonstrations that support concepts discussed in CHEM 111. Three hours per week.

  • CHEM 103 Fundamentals of Chemistry

    This course teaches the fundamentals of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. It is intended for non-science majors and nursing students. Topics include measurement, matter, energy, atomic theory, ionic and covalent compounds, mole-gram conversions, chemical reactions and equations, states of matter, solutions and their properties, acids, bases, pH, organic compounds, and biological applications. Three hours of lecture. Students must take MATH 110 or MATH 111 as a co-requisite for this course if they have not already successfully completed it.
