Building AI for Big Data Biology: Computational Models for High-throughput Sequencing Data

    Presenter: Mr. David Ludwig

High-throughput DNA sequencing (HDS) data is now becoming widely available and analysis of this data requires new  computational methods. Deep learning methods have been successfully applied to other biological data, but the  unstructured elements of HDS require new deep learning approaches. In this talk, we will investigate the suitability of new  deep learning approaches adapted for unstructured domains on HDS data obtained from prairie soil samples to uncover  relationships between different soil microbial communities.

Pushing the Limits: Helping Computers Learn from Potentially Unlimited, Unstructured Data Sets

    Presenter: Ms. Kendra Givens

Much data in our world consists of unstructured sets of structured objects (sets of documents, sets of images, sets DNA  sequences, etc.). Deep learning approaches have been used in the past to analyze large -structured- data, even of  potentially arbitrarily length. However, novel modifications to such methods are needed to process an arbitrary number of  structured items (not just a single item at a time). In this talk, we describe the creation of a new deep learning architecture  which extends approaches for processing structured data to the unstructured domain, allowing for potentially arbitrary sized sets of data to be processed. We investigate the current strengths and limitations of our approach on an important  unstructured data analysis problem in computational biology: categorization of high-throughput DNA sequencing data  obtained from prairie soil samples.
