How I Chose my Major

Coming into college, I was unsure about what exactly I wanted to do as a profession, so as an incoming freshman my major was undeclared. 

I have always had an interest in doing something in the medical field, but I kept going back and forth between wanting to work with individuals with special needs and wanting to be a physician assistant in dermatology. This past December, I decided that the best way for me to find out if being a physician assistant was what I wanted to do was by shadowing one.

I shadowed a physician assistant who I used to go to church with and I really enjoyed it. I loved how interactive physician assistants get to be with their patients and how they can still prescribe and practice medicine as a doctor would. I loved the idea that in just two years of physician assistant school, I would be certified in multiple medical fields which would allow me to have a career to fall back on if I don’t enjoy dermatology. With this degree, I will hopefully be able to work with individuals with special needs.  

In January, I declared Biology as my major and plan to attend PA school after graduation. So far, I have only taken my general education classes, but this semester I am taking my core major classes and I am enjoying them. I am enjoying my Safety and First Aid class because I am learning life-saving skills that I can use in my day to day life. I am excited to start taking more classes next semester that pertain to my major and to see where I end up going for PA school. 

I’m so excited to be in a major that will translate so easily into my career, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
