Program Length
12 months – Can be completed in as little as one year. Average length of time to complete the program is two years.
Students may attend three semesters (Fall, Spring and Summer) split into two eight-week terms (A term and B term). This gives you six options in which to start the program. Students typically take one or two courses per term, depending on whether they want to graduate in one, two or more years. There is flexibility in the program to adjust to individual needs of pacing as work demands and graduate school are balanced to fit the graduate student’s life.
Mode
Hybrid: Blend of online and on-ground courses. Seven courses are delivered online and five courses are offered on-ground in the evenings during the fall and spring semesters.

MSES 5997 Internship
A carefully planned and supervised 400 hour work experience in a fitness, sport, or athletic facility or organization. The internship must be relevant to the students major and specialization within the major. The specific internship type is researched and selected by the student in conjunction with assistance from the student’s advisor. Final approval for the internship is determined by the internship coordinator. A final project will be determined in conjunction with the advisor and internship coordinator for successful completion. The internship option is recommended for students who did not complete an internship as part of his/her undergraduate program and/or do not plan to pursue academia or research beyond the Master’s degree.

MSES 5998 Graduate Project
The non-thesis option provides the Master’s candidate the opportunity to pursue a career related, applied experience whereby one of the following is undertaken: 1) a program is implemented, revised and/or evaluated, 2) an event is organized and facilitated, or 3) an applied experience which the graduate project coordinator agrees to supervise. The candidate should propose the project to his/her advisor & project coordinator and actively seek an organization or develop the plan on his/her own in which to implement the project. Per the advisor’s and/or coordinator’s request, a literature review and conceptual rationale for the project should accompany the proposal, and at the completion of the project a final portfolio and/or presentation should be submitted and/or conducted. The project is a good option for the candidate wishing to become a practitioner in the field.

MSES 5999 Thesis
The thesis is an independent, original research study, by which the Master’s candidate completes the study as a culmination of the graduate program. The candidate is to propose a research study or question, collect data, and report on those findings. The study methods and final format and style for the document are to be determined by the thesis committee during the proposal process. The thesis is an appropriate option for students with the desire to obtain a terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D.) program or pursue a career related to research.

This course provides an introduction to quantitative and qualitative research on which sport and exercise pedagogy are (is) based. The course will address four main competencies including: 1) understand the nature of the scientific method, 2) describe various methods of quantitative and qualitative research, 3) read, understand and evaluate empirically based research, and 4) show ability to write a research proposal.

MSES 5996 Special Topics in Sport and Exercise Science
This course is designed to provide the graduate candidate with an intensive experiential learning opportunity. Students in the course will participate in a field trip whereby they will observe, tour, and work in exercise, sport, and/or health profession organizations. This hands-on opportunity will allow students to learn more about potential career pathways, obtain marketing and networking skills, and acquire professional work experience that can be used to develop a resume. Intensive experiential learning opportunities are determined on a semester-to-semester basis and can include domestic or international locations.

MBA 5060 Individual & Organizational Ethics
This course examines the challenges of considering the ethical aspects of individual and organizational actions, behaviors, decision-making, problem-solving and conflict resolution, the content examines the complexities of the environmental impact on ethical actions. Students are enabled to analyze and reflect on the ramifications of decisions and actions from the individual and organizational perspective. Topics include honesty and deception in organizations, the use and abuse of trust, and the challenge of leadership in developing ethical organizational cultures. PE 5016 Motor Learning & Development
Designed to acquaint the candidate with the acquisition of basic skills, motor control, and psychomotor learning principles. These principles are applied across the various age groups. This course requires field experiences in a P-12 classroom during school hours.
Pursuant to Tennessee law, a Criminal History Record Investigation (background check) must be on file in the University Licensure Office before field experiences can be authorized.

All students must purchase a single person use for the program SPSS during enrollment in EXSS5990: Quantitative Methods.

Most courses in the Master's in Exercise & Sport Science program utilize CANVAS as the online learning platform and therefore students are required to have regular access to a computer throughout the duration of each course.

Due to the course sequence students must enroll in courses during at least one summer semester. However, those courses can be completed via distance given they are not offered on-ground.

All Master of Sport & Exercise Science students must complete a capstone experience (EXSS5997, EXSS5998, or EXSS5999) prior to graduation. Students should determine the most appropriate capstone option with his/her advisor at least two semesters prior to graduation.

Students must be admitted to a graduate program before being considered for a CU Graduate Assistantship position.
