Program Details

The Nurse Executive Leadership and Administration focuses on theories, research, and evidence-based practices of nurse executive leadership and administration. Graduate online learners examine the knowledge and skills nurse executives need to manage health care quality and safety. Emphasis is on management of finance and operations of healthcare organization, leading health care innovations and strategies to respond to health care challenges and trends. Throughout the course curricula, learners are directed to assess and strengthen their characteristics in ethics, cultural awareness, and health care leadership. Successful graduates of this specialization are prepared to pursue roles as nurse executives in a variety of health care delivery settings.

  • MSN 5100 Nursing Theoretical Foundations

    In this course, learners analyze concepts and theories pertinent to the practice of professional nursing. Learners examine historical, legal, cultural, economic, and social factors that influence nursing and health care delivery. Philosophical perspectives upon the professional nursing practice are considered. Nursing theories are addressed as frameworks for practice and strategies are discussed for analyzing and managing ethical dilemmas in nursing and health care.

  • MSN 5110 Nursing Research and Scholarly Synthesis

    This course provides the learner with an in-depth review of research processes, including quantitative, qualitative, and outcomes research designs. Learners examine research problems in nursing practice, explore ethical and legal issues related to nursing research and apply a theoretical model in designing a research study. Emphasis is placed on use of evidence-based practice (EBP).

  • MSN 5120 Health Information Systems and Nursing Technology

    In this course the learner will focus on information systems and technologies that support the clinical setting. Course will provide a basic foundation of informatics, historically through current systems, used in today’s healthcare setting. Learners will be introduced to topics that include Systems Life Cycles, Data Storage and Retrieval, Electronic Medical Records, and Electronic Health Records, Community Health Integration, Best Practice/Evidence Based Practice, and Current Informatics Issues.

  • MSN 5130 Professional Leadership and Collaboration

    In this course learners examine the challenges confronting nurse executive leaders in the twenty-first century. Emphasis is on analyzing executive leadership and communication skills used to facilitate and promote group consensus and compromise. Learners examine the skill-set needed for developing and maintaining beneficial relationships and partnerships to promote optimal health outcomes.

  • MSN 5140 Legislation, Policy, Regulations, and Ethics in Health Care

    In this course learners will examine significant issues affecting U.S. health policy and legislation. The course provides an overview of the development of health policy and evaluates factors that affect health policy initiatives. Learners identify and develop leadership strategies that are directed toward creating policy including meeting political compromise.

  • MSN 5200 Advanced Physical Health Assessment

    In this course learners are provided a strong foundation in the health advanced assessment skills essential for clinical practice. The course is focused on the diagnostic reasoning process as it relates to building a clinical database regarding individual patients. Course includes history taking, physical examination skills, laboratory, and diagnostic modalities.

  • MSN 5210 Advanced Physiology/Pathophysiology

    In this course, the learner is prepared to examine underlying mechanisms of changes in physiology by a systematic examination of disease. The learner will compare and contrast differential diagnosis within physiological systems of sub-cellular and cellular origin, biochemical, and anatomical changes across the lifespan.

  • MSN 5220 Advanced Pharmacology

    In this course the learner will examine the principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics of drugs that are commonly used in managing acute and chronic illnesses in adults. Importance is placed upon decision-making in therapeutic drug selection and monitoring response for diverse patients. Patient education, ethical, socio-economic, and legal issues are addressed. Additionally, practice and regulatory components of APRN prescribing are reviewed.

  • MSN 6300 Healthcare Business and Finance Management

    The focus of this course is to provide the graduate online learner with an overall high-level understanding of financial management and concepts of healthcare systems at an executive level. This broad-spectrum approach includes human resource management (staffing) at the clinical level, community based facility, community based health, underserved and diverse population health care, and corporate and non-profit organizational structuring. Graduate online learners will develop skills that are needed to analyze costs and benefits for healthcare budgets and apply principles of business, economics, and finance.

  • MSN 6310 Healthcare Operations - Law, Policy, Quality, Ethics and Human Resources

    This course introduces the learner to elements of healthcare through the aspects of legal, ethical, and moral standards. The focus of this course is how to provide quality healthcare based in policy and procedures within legal and ethical standards. Aspects presented include community health, facility health, and employee/physician relationships. This course will also review emerging health issues and trends through the legislative perspective.

  • MSN 6320 Professional Nursing Role in Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems

    This course defines the nurse as a professional from the clinical bedside through the executive leader. Content focuses on making a difference in the workplace through areas of workforce development, resource management, technology integration, incorporation of increasing governmental standards/regulations, leadership/mentorship, and role definition of future health care changes.

  • MSN 6330 Excellence in Advanced Leadership Roles

    The focus of this course will be the refinement of total leadership skills that include communication, leadership, and professionalism as applied in today’s healthcare environment. Specific areas of concentration include knowledge of diverse health care environments, relationship building, business/financial planning, marketing, human resource management, and current healthcare events.

  • MSN 6550 Executive Leadership Capstone

    In the course, the learner will highlight all of his/her professional endeavors of past and present, academic and work achievements. The learner will complete a professional portfolio that includes achievements, a summary of the issues that relate to current nursing practice, as well as the projections of long-term and short-term professional goals. Additionally, learners will develop a resume and philosophy of nursing leadership.

  • MSN 6560 Executive Leadership Practicum I

    This course experience is designed so that the graduate online learners’ efforts are focused on the synthesis of previously gained knowledge and skills in the delivery of nursing leadership and healthcare administration. Students will begin to develop and implement a proposal for a practicum experience that includes purpose, preceptor/setting, objectives, goals, and actions. The MSN Program requirement is 240 practicum hours in a practice setting. This course includes 60 hours of practice setting experience over 8 weeks.

  • MSN 6565 Executive Leadership Practicum II

    This course experience is designed so that the graduate online learners’ efforts are focused on the synthesis of previously gained knowledge and skills in the delivery of nursing leadership and healthcare administration. Students will complete the practicum experience that includes purpose, preceptor/setting, objectives, goals, and actions. The MSN program requirement is 240 practicum hours in a practice setting. This course includes 180 hours of practice setting experience over 16 weeks.
