Program Details

The Nurse Educator emphasis provides an in-depth review of learning theories, research, and best practices of nursing education. Graduate Online Learners analyze teaching strategies for diverse populations and environments, and incorporate theory to practice. The program prepares the graduate to develop program design, deliver content, and perform formative and summative evaluations techniques. The Nurse Educator emphasis is designed to prepare nurses for educational roles in academia, health care organizations, and health care systems.

  • MSN 5100 Nursing Theoretical Foundations

    In this course, learners analyze concepts and theories pertinent to the practice of professional nursing. Learners examine historical, legal, cultural, economic, and social factors that influence nursing and health care delivery. Philosophical perspectives upon the professional nursing practice are considered. Nursing theories are addressed as frameworks for practice and strategies are discussed for analyzing and managing ethical dilemmas in nursing and health care.

  • MSN 5110 Nursing Research and Scholarly Synthesis

    This course provides the learner with an in-depth review of research processes, including quantitative, qualitative, and outcomes research designs. Learners examine research problems in nursing practice, explore ethical and legal issues related to nursing research and apply a theoretical model in designing a research study. Emphasis is placed on use of evidence-based practice (EBP).

  • MSN 5120 Health Information Systems and Nursing Technology

    In this course the learner will focus on information systems and technologies that support the clinical setting. Course will provide a basic foundation of informatics, historically through current systems, used in today’s healthcare setting. Learners will be introduced to topics that include Systems Life Cycles, Data Storage and Retrieval, Electronic Medical Records, and Electronic Health Records, Community Health Integration, Best Practice/Evidence Based Practice, and Current Informatics Issues.

  • MSN 5130 Professional Leadership and Collaboration

    In this course learners examine the challenges confronting nurse executive leaders in the twenty-first century. Emphasis is on analyzing executive leadership and communication skills used to facilitate and promote group consensus and compromise. Learners examine skill-set needed for developing and maintaining beneficial relationships and partnerships to promote optimal health outcomes.

  • MSN 5140 Legislation, Policy, Regulations, and Ethics in Health Care

    In this course learners will examine significant issues affecting U.S. health policy and legislation. The course provides an overview of the development of health policy and evaluates factors that affect health policy initiatives. Learners identify and develop leadership strategies that are directed toward creating policy including meeting political compromise.

  • MSN 5200 Advanced Physical Health Assessment

    In this course learners are provided a strong foundation in the health advanced assessment skills essential for clinical practice. The course is focused on the diagnostic reasoning process as it relates to building a clinical database regarding individual patients. Course includes history taking, physical examination skills, laboratory, and diagnostic modalities.

  • MSN 5210 Advanced Physiology/Pathophysiology

    In this course, the learner is prepared to examine underlying mechanisms of changes in physiology by a systematic examination of disease. The learner will compare and contrast differential diagnosis within physiological systems of sub-cellular and cellular origin, biochemical, and anatomical changes across the lifespan.

  • MSN 5220 Advanced Pharmacology

    In this course the learner will examine the principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics of drugs that are commonly used in managing acute and chronic illnesses in adults. Importance is placed upon decision-making in therapeutic drug selection and monitoring response for diverse patients. Patient education, ethical, socio-economic, and legal issues are addressed. Additionally, practice and regulatory components of APRN prescribing are reviewed.

    In this course, learners are prepared to become a prospective nurse educator with the foundational principles necessary for teaching in various settings: classroom, laboratories, and health care agencies.

  • MSN 6110 Nurse Educator Role and Dynamic of Higher Education

    In this course, learners explore academic policies, protocols, and legal aspects of education. Academia relationships, prospective and current student issues, as well as laws affecting students will be examined. Emphasis on classroom and clinical setting events that occur will be researched to discuss and develop a method for applying law to study faculty issues.

  • MSN 6120 Teaching Strategies, Learning and Evaluation Methods

    In this course, classroom teaching methodologies are introduced. Learner will examine course planning, instruction delivery, grading and assessing student learning, course management, and professional development and innovation around teaching. Additionally, support for student experiential learning and service learning are examined. The course also provides strategies for distant education.

  • MSN 6130 Curriculum Frameworks and Design

    Learners in this course focus on the role in higher education or peer education. Learners are prepared for course and curricula design and program outcome assessment, along with roles of faculty and administrators in these processes. Several philosophical approaches will be considered that fit the schools programs beliefs, assumptions, and values including core nursing concepts: health promotion, critical thinking and decision making, evidence based nursing, student/faculty collaboration, and patient assessment. In addition, core concepts of curriculum will be examined that include: Constructivism/Post-positivism, Humanism-existentialism, Critical social theory, Collaborative inquiry, epistemology, Action-sensitive pedagogy, Apprenticeship/Cognitive apprenticeship, Behaviorism/positivism, and Feminism.

  • MSN 6510 Nursing Practicum I

    In this course graduate online learners will demonstrate knowledge and competencies essential to the master’s prepared nurse. In collaboration with a nurse preceptor and instructor, the students will demonstrate learned theories through application in a practical setting. Through synthesis of advanced knowledge and skills, the student will begin the design of a scholarly project in an area of professional relevance.

  • MSN 6520 Nursing Practicum II

    In this course the graduate online learner will demonstrate a continuation of knowledge and competencies essential to the master’s prepared nurse. Through synthesis of advanced knowledge and skills, the student will continue the design of a scholarly project in an area of professional relevance.

  • MSN 6590 Nursing Education Capstone

    In this course, the learner will highlight all of his/her professional endeavors of past and present academic and work achievements. The learner will complete a professional portfolio that includes achievements, a summary of the issues that relate to current nursing practice, as well as the projections of long-term and short-term professional goals. Additionally, learners will develop a resume and philosophy of nursing education.
