Course Requirements

The MS-EM program requires a minimum of 35 credit hours – typically 10 three credit hour courses with 5 one credit hours field experience courses. The core requirements consist of ten courses that all ITM students must complete. Students then take 5-6 credit hours of either field experience courses or additional MBA, MSITM, or MSEM courses chosen in coordination with the student’s academic advisor.

  • MBA 5121 Managerial Accounting

    A study of accounting information developed for managers within an organization. Analysis of accounting statements is emphasized for planning, decision making, and controlling purposes. Issues and trends in accounting are reviewed to complete the study.

  • MBA 5161 Marketing Management

    A study of strategic marketing planning and analysis of the marketing function in relation with various internal and external environments. Designing marketing programs for various demand segments constitutes the heart of the study. Issues of innovation, implementation and evaluation of programs complete the study.

  • MBA 5253 Applied Statistics

    Concepts of statistical analysis and inference are studied, including descriptive statistics, probability theory, statistical estimation, tests of hypotheses, analyses of variance, and regression and correlation analyses. Emphasis is placed on applied regression analysis of service operations data.

  • MBA 5316 Project Management

    This course incorporates project management software in the study for project conception, plan and control. The course uses this software in a context of building team leadership and cohesion through organizational designs. Project objectives, change management and individual roles, risk and resource management, and management parameters are studied for efficient and effective results. Trends in project management complete the study.

  • MBA 5550 Principles of Theories and Leadership
    This course focuses on the scope and nature of leading in diverse organizational settings, with special emphasis on examining traditional and contemporary leadership theories, concepts and principles for their application in present organizational settings that are increasingly being effected by environmental complexities and globalization. A primary objective of the course is to enable students to evaluate past and present leaders, as well as reflect on themselves as leaders, in conjunction with findings from research, theory and experience.

  • ITM 5400 Emerging Technologies

    This course exposes students to current technology solutions and methods to identify emerging technology and evaluate the suitability for an organization in terms of selection, integration, distribution, and maintenance.

  • MSEM 5320 Operations & Supply Chain Management

    This course explores modern techniques for operations management, logistics, and supply chain management. Topics include MRP systems, optimizations algorithms, economic order quantities, forecasting, and vendor management.

  • MSEM 5340 IP & Business Law for Engineers

    This course examines key constructs related to intellectual property and other legal constraints, regulations, and guidelines that impact the management of engineering processes and related business practices. Topics include patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets, best practices for due diligence in business mergers and acquisitions, contract negotiation, environmental protection and labor laws.

  • MSEM 5460 Decision Making and Risk Analysis

    This course focuses on sophisticated techniques for Decision Making, Problem Solving, and Risk Analysis for Engineering Managers. The course builds upon 4 fundamental processes initially developed by Chuck Kepner and Ben Tregoe, two renowned scientists at the RAND Corporation, and the application of these 4 processes to modern engineering management issues.

  • MSEM 550 Quality Management

    This course examines modern theory and techniques for managing product quality to minimize variability and improve adherence to product specifications – and thus economic outcomes

    Credit Hours: 3

  • MSEM 5450 Engineering Management Field Experience

    This course allows students to gain practical work experience in Engineering Management. This course may be repeated.

    Credit Hour: 1

  • Electives

    Student can elect to take 6 credit hours of additional MSEM, MSITM, or MBA courses. Electives may include Engineering Management Field Experience.

The MS in Engineering Management will focus on four primary outcomes anchored in Global Connectedness, Communication, and Critical Thinking.

  • Demonstrate or explain important concepts or techniques related to engineering management
  • Perform critical analysis of complex engineering management situations and offer and evaluate alternative solutions
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current technologies, industry trends, and challenges as well as an understanding of strategies to maintain currency
  • Effectively communicate technical information accurately and professionally both orally and in writing.
