The 30-credit hour MAE program combines a core course component (4 courses) with elective hours (6 courses) that allow the candidate to choose appropriate coursework to match their professional development interests.

Students may attend three semesters (Fall, Spring and Summer) split into two eight-week terms (A term and B term). This gives you six options in which to start the program.

MAE 5010 Innovative Instructional Technology
Provides the opportunities to develop skills and to enhance understanding of innovative technologies including the use of the computer as a teaching tool. Emphasis is given to a systematic approach to the selection and evaluation of media in the classroom. Attention is also given to the development of the teacher’s competencies in locating and creating instructional materials for programs in the school classroom.

MAE 5020 School Law
A study of cases providing a legal framework for the operation of the educational system and the environment in which school personnel function. Specific topic areas include academic freedom, attendance, busing, conduct (employee and student), integration and segregation, liability (institutional and personal), malpractice, protected speech, pupil assignment, religion, and search and seizure.

MAE 5030 Curriculum Designs
Designed to acquaint students with current trends in curriculum design, legislation affecting curriculum, state mandated programs, innovative programs, and organizational patterns. It is designed also to encourage educators to anticipate needs of learners in the next generation and to elucidate means by which these needs can be met through curriculum design.

MAE 5040 Contemporary Issues
A study of the movements, issues, projections, and potential directions in the area of education from early elementary through higher education. This is an in-depth study of current research, observation, and practices of prototypes.

MAE 5050 Advanced Educational Psychology
A study of psychological theory and research as both apply to the K-12 classroom. Cognitive psychological theory and research are given more prominent treatment than other systems. Assignments and readings assume basic understanding of introductory issues in psychology and in educational psychology.

MAE 5120 School Public Relations/Communications
Emphasis on interactive issues pertaining to the improvement in relationships among schools, families, and communities. It also includes exposure to a network of field contracts and to relevant methodology and research experience.

Customize your focus - 18 Guided Electives
You may choose six additional courses to complete the MAE graduation requirement. Elective courses must be approved by a university academic advisor based on a program of study designed to meet the individual’s professional development needs and interests. Elective courses may be selected from any graduate-level program at the university with the exception of the Master of Science in Nursing.
The program of study may also include those courses identified for additional endorsements for those candidates who hold a current and valid Tennessee Teaching license.
Candidates holding a current and valid Tennessee teaching license who are seeking an additional endorsement will have their transcripts evaluated by the licensure officer in the Education office. An outline of courses necessary for the additional endorsement will be prepared. The director will advise candidates of their program of study to complete the additional endorsements. Each semester, individual candidate’s schedules will be reviewed and approved by the coordinator prior to authorization for registration.
Comprehensive Final Examination
All candidates for the Master of Arts in Education degree must successfully complete a Comprehensive Exam near the completion of all other degree requirements. Regulations concerning the Comprehensive Examination are as follows:

The Comprehensive Exam is completed in the final semester of coursework and prior to graduation.

All examinations are developed and administered by members of the Graduate Faculty as appointed by the Director of the MAE Program.

This examination is designed to cover the various components of the graduate program.

All tests will be graded and critiqued for APA format, grammar, and punctuation.

Each question will be graded and critiqued for course content and relevant research by the primary author(s) of the question.

A candidate who does not satisfactorily complete all portions of the written comprehensive examination may, within one year, take all or any part of the examination again as determined by the MAE faculty.
