Fernando Flores

Fernando Flores is a freshman from El Salvador who is majoring in Accounting and Management, and plays tennis at CU.

Why did you choose to study Accounting and Management?

My goal is to start my own business. Upon gaining the necessary skills, these two degrees seemed the most valuable for my career.

Why did you want to study in the U.S. and why did you choose Cumberland?

Since I was a kid, I have liked the environment and culture of the U.S. Upon researching, I found that the opportunities offered are fantastic. I decided that I wanted to study and live the college experience in the U.S. Since I am a tennis player, I also wanted to join a strong college tennis team. Cumberland University was able to meet all of my criteria in the best way possible, and everything seemed to fit in perfectly.

What is your favorite study spot on campus?

I like to study in my room, but sometimes I opt for the library. I learn and study best with complete silence.

Who has helped you during your college career as you were transitioning from your country to Middle Tennessee?

Definitely my teammates. They have all been extremely kind and inclusive. We joke that we have known each other our whole lives because the bond and trust that is already there is impressive.

What do you do for fun?

I love hanging out with friends and playing tennis with them.

What does a college education mean to you?

A college education serves as a gateway into the large number of opportunities in the workforce. I see it as a means of learning valuable skills, lessons, as well as meeting new people and living new experiences.
