Licensure

Traditional Pathway

The Traditional Pathway is available at both the undergraduate and graduate/post-baccalaureate levels. Undergraduate candidates complete approved programs of study outlined for the specific major. Candidates are required to obtain formal admission to the Cumberland University Educator Preparation Program through the

STEPP I process and successfully complete student teaching during the final semester.  Graduate candidates enroll in the Master of Teaching (MAT) program, obtain formal admission through the STEPP I process and successfully complete student teaching during the final semester.

Alternate Pathway

The Alternate Pathway or job-embedded programs allow individuals to be employed as the teacher of record in a Tennessee school while completing required coursework for the approved program of study. For more information contact Karen Hobson (khobson@cumberland.edu), Cumberland University Certification Analyst.

Additional Endorsements

Additional Endorsements are available to individuals who hold an initial license. These endorsements may be added to the initial license. Interested individuals should submit a transcript for analysis to the Certification Analyst (khobson@cumberland.edu). The analysis will outline any pending coursework and required assessments needed for the additional endorsement. Some endorsements may be added by a test-only (PRAXIS II Specialty Area Exam) option. The Tennessee State Department of Education provides guidance for adding endorsements in the Educator Licensure & Preparation Operating Procedures Guide

Download Guide

Candidates seeking an additional endorsement apply for admission to the Masters in Education program (MAE) and may elect to complete the required courses for the degree (non-degree option) or complete the full degree program of study.
