International Education Week: Jakob Schermer

Jakob Schermer

Originally from Munich, Germany, Jakob Schermer enrolled at Cumberland University to study Sport and Exercise Science and play on the Men’s Tennis team.

Why did you want to study in the U.S. and why did you choose Cumberland?

I think the combination of sports and college is unique and provides perfect opportunities for improving your education and your level of performance in sport. I chose Cumberland because I like the tennis program and the internationality of the university.

What is your favorite study spot on campus?

For real studying I go to my room, but for hanging out, my favorite spot is the LCC.

Who has helped you during your college career as you were transitioning from your country to Middle Tennessee?

Definitely my teammates. From the start, they were friendly and helpful, and I felt very welcomed.

What do you do for fun?

I play tennis, soccer, basketball and spike ball, and commentate soccer games in Germany.

What does an education mean to you?

I am grateful for having the chance to study abroad and to study in general. I think you can still have a good life with an apprenticeship too, depending on what you like to do.
