Master of Arts in Education

Grow professionally and earn up to 44% more per year with a Master of Arts in Education degree from Cumberland University.

The Master of Arts in Education (MAE) program is designed for individuals seeking an advanced professional degree in education focused on individual interest and professional growth. The program is designed for licensed teachers but may be appropriate for others interested in a practitioner-focused degree in education. Individuals interested in acquiring teacher licensure for the first time should enroll in the Master of Arts in Teaching program.

MAE Mission

The mission of the Master of Arts in Education program is to provide a broad-based teaching curriculum designed to augment teaching skills, to introduce the candidate to innovative dimensions of learning, and to enhance professional performance in the classroom.

Program Goals

In Cumberland University’s MAE program you will:

  • Earn an advanced, practitioner-focused degree in as little as one year.
  • Augment and expand your teaching skill set with add-on endorsements.
  • Discover innovative dimensions of learning.
  • Enhance your professional performance in the classroom.
  • Explore new tools to improve student outcomes.
  • Learn at your own pace — there are no required login times.
  • Network with educators and administrators from different schools — they are your classmates.

Add-On Endorsements

A variety of add-on endorsements may be added to current Tennessee teachers licenses with coursework and passing Praxis scores. You may customize your degree to include add-on endorsements, or can take only the necessary courses to complete an add-on endorsement. Add-on endorsements at CU include English as a Second Language, Special Education, Biology, Physical Education, and Mathematics. Please contact Cumberland’s certification officer for details.

What our graduates say

“The MAE program brought me many things, but most of all it made me fall in love with teaching all over again. I gained new knowledge through researching and reading and the advisors and professors at Cumberland University were very helpful and encouraging throughout my journey. As a first generation college and graduate student I believe in the value of an advanced degree which is why I tell my students to never stop learning. I look forward to using the multiple resources and techniques to better myself as an educator.”

-Heather Mullins, Class of 2021
