Matt Moriarty was hired as the Defensive Line Coach/Run Game Coordinator at Cumberland on Feb. 27, 2023. Moriarty spent the 2022 season as the Defensive Tackles coach at the University of North Alabama.

At UNA, Moriarty mentored a group that featured ASUN All-Conference selection Micah Bland.

Prior to the UNA, Moriarty served in the same capacity as Defensive Tackles Coach at Drake University in 2021. Moriarty coached a defensive group that featured two Pioneer League All-Conference selections in Max Johnson & Jake Hoper as well as rank top 10 in FCS in Red Zone Defense (5th) & 3rd Down Conversion Pct Def (9th).

Moriarty came to Drake after being a defensive assistant at Samford University during the 2021 covid spring season. At Samford, Moriarty helped mentor a defensive front that ranked 3rd in the SoCon in sacks (7) as well as 2 All SoCon selections in Armond Lloyd & Nelson Jordan.

Moriarty spent the 2019 & 2020 season at Northern Illinois University as a special teams quality control assistant. In 2020 Freshman All American Trayvon Rudolph, ranked 1st in the MAC and 2nd in the country in return yards (725). Moriarty also mentored NIU’s all-time leading and All MAC punter Matt Ference, who Averaged 41.2 yards per punt in 10 games, including a career-best 43.0 yards on 65 punts.

In 2018 Moriarty was a defensive line graduate assistant at Central Michigan. CMU’s Defense that season would rank top 30 in the nation in 4th down defense (27th) and red zone defense (28th). CMU ranked 36th in total defense as well. Moriarty helped mentor a Defensive front that consisted of All MAC selection Nathan Brison-Fast and Mike Danna. Danna would go on to be drafted in the 5th round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020.

Prior to CMU, Moriarty spent time at the Junior College & Division 3 level coaching Defensive Line.

Moriarty played collegiately at Harper Junior College located in Palatine, IL as an offensive and defensive lineman. There he was a part of the 2008 NJCAA national championship team. After Harper he finished his playing career at Elmhurst College.

A native of Naperville, Illinois, Moriarty graduated from Elmhurst College in 2014 with a degree in communications.
