Cumberland University Presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Cumberland University is thrilled to announce the upcoming production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” directed by Jenny Ballard, Assistant Professor of Theatre. This highly anticipated show is scheduled to run from March 21 to March 24. 

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” has received prestigious awards, including the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book. Set in a small town, the musical follows the journey of six quirky and talented young spellers as they compete for the coveted title of spelling champion. Amidst the laughter and excitement, the audience will be treated to candid and touching stories from the spellers’ lives, creating a truly immersive experience.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to witness the incredible talent of our Cumberland University students,” said Ballard. “You don’t have to go all the way to NYC to see amazing theater. Our production showcases the exceptional skills of our students in a fun and engaging way. We invite everyone to join the fun as our students shine in the ensemble musical comedy featuring an impressive live orchestra. Who knows, audience members may even find themselves competing in the Spelling Bee.”

Featuring a cast of Cumberland University students, including Christina Shandor, Andrew Ingram, Ally Barnett, JD Moore, Alex Sain, Takiah Ledo, Kai’a Chaffin, Tristan Olsen, Mae Jenkins, Karsen Jefferson, Kayla Whyte, Carter Medley and Evin Ross, this production promises to be a riotous ride filled with comedic genius.

The June and Bill Heydel Fine Arts Center is also preparing for the show with facility enhancements thanks to the generosity of Mr. William Heydel. This show will be performed with brand-new LED lighting, a brand-new sound system, and state-of-the-art soundboard and body microphones, adding to the excitement of the show’s upcoming debut. 

Tickets for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” are priced at $20 for general admission, $10 for CU faculty/staff and $5 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at the following link:
