Cumberland to Create Chemistry Degree for Fall 2020

Cumberland University announced today that it will offer a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree to students beginning Fall 2020.

The program will be housed in the Labry School of Science, Business and Technology. This addition comes from a growing interest in students wanting to pursue careers in the chemistry field and continue on to graduate and professional programs.

Chemistry Program Director Dr. Sarah Pierce is excited about the creation of this major.

“According to the United States Department of Labor, the employment outlook for chemists is expected to grow 7% from 2016 to 2026,” said Dr. Pierce. “With an increased demand for chemists in the workplace, I am excited that we are expanding our curriculum and offering a degree in chemistry to our students.”

This program will prepare students with an overview of several different areas of chemistry, including general chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry and instrumental analysis.Courses will also be dedicated to scientific communication, programming and data analysis to teach students how to effectively analyze and communicate their research.
