Cumberland University announced today the creation of the It’s Time to Rise Scholarship for incoming students. This $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to each of 10 new students for the Fall 2022 semester.

Cumberland believes that all students deserve access to higher education and the university is passionate about finding ways to remove the many barriers associated with earning a college degree. Currently 93% of Cumberland students receive tuition subsidies in the form of scholarships and grants, and the university continues to find ways to ease financial barriers for students.

The It’s Time to Rise Scholarships were created to financially assist new students and their families during their first semester at Cumberland. The university will award 10 scholarships to students starting their college careers at Cumberland during Fall 2022.

Cumberland is dedicated to creating educational opportunities for all students, and especially those who will become the first to earn a college degree in their family. First generation college students make up nearly 30%of CU’s current student body, and the university is committed to ensuring these students are provided the necessary resources and assistance to complete their degrees. Five of the 10 It’s Time to Rise Scholarships will be awarded to incoming students who self-identify as first-generation college students on their applications.

The remaining five scholarship awardees will be chosen at random, and every student that has applied to Cumberland between Aug. 1, 2021 and March 15, 2022 will be eligible to receive one of the five $1,500 scholarships.

“Cumberland is a private university that provides a quality, high touch, personalized experience, with similar tuition costs as larger public universities,” said Vice President for Enrollment Services Reggie Blair. “We are dedicated to ensuring that every student has an opportunity to attend Cumberland, regardless of their financial situation. Our office works closely with students and their families to find scholarships, grants and aid that make a Cumberland education affordable for all.”

Cumberland has been a proud participant of the Tennessee Promise program since its inception, giving eligible Tennessee students the opportunity to receive a bachelor’s degree with the first two years tuition free. Additionally, Cumberland offers the Phoenix Promise program that allows higher need Tennessee students to earn a bachelor’s degree tuition free. The university continues to implement initiatives to assist students and their families with the financial aspect of earning a college degree.

This week, both Yale University and Harvard University announced plans to join other institutions in prioritizing more inclusive access to higher education, focusing on need-based financial aid. Cumberland is proud to be a leader in this important higher education movement by offering robust scholarships and grants that make a college degree affordable for all.

To qualify for the It’s Time to Rise Scholarships, new students must apply to Cumberland by March 15, 2022. Applicants can apply for free to Cumberland through March 15, 2022 by using the application fee waiver code CU1842. Scholarship recipients will be announced by email on April 8, 2022.
