Cumberland University Dedicates Memorial Hall Carillon and Other Campus Enhancements to Distinguished Families

On Dec. 1, Cumberland University dedicated its new carillon in Memorial Hall’s clock tower and honored some of its most distinguished donors.

For the first time in decades, Memorial Hall will have a carillon that will interface with its clock, tolling on the hour and playing the alma mater at the close of every business day. In addition, emergency weather alerts given by the Wilson County Emergency Management Agency (WEMA) and other emergency notifications relevant to the surrounding community will be given over the carillon speaker that can be heard from 1 to 3 miles in all directions. The carillon initiative was generously supported by the West Family Foundation.

As a way to continue beautifying Cumberland’s 180-year-old campus, seven generous families- the Adams Family, the Barry Family, the Bone Family, the Bryant Family, the Carroll Family, the James Family, and the Moscardelli Family- supported sustainability enhancements, including increased campus walkability and additional outdoor seating. These families donated iron benches, each with special messages etched into a plaque, either in honor of or in memory of their relatives.

“We are so grateful to these families for their ongoing support of Cumberland,” said President Stumb. “The installation of the carillon and the dedication of benches around the McClain Circle are part of the campus beautification project, which will positively impact our magnificent campus for many decades to come.”

Beginning in the 1850s, bells rang across campus from University Hall until 1861 when Confederate soldiers melted down the large brass bell for the casting of a cannon. It wasn’t until 1967, that an automated carillon was installed, but fell into disrepair in the 1990s.

Thanks to the kindness of these friends of the university, Cumberland University’s community will enjoy the sound of bells once again.
