The family of the late Max Smith of Lebanon, Tenn., showed their support of Cumberland University Athletics by making a $5,000 donation today in his memory. They have pledged to give the same amount or more each year.

Ann McDearman Smith, his wife of 64 years, and his sons, Rick and Chip Smith, visited Cumberland University today to present a check to Dr. Paul Stumb, president, and Ron Pavan, athletic director and interim vice president for enrollment management.

“Our father loved Cumberland sports, and we are just glad to be able to do this,” said Chip Smith.

Pavan said, “We are so thankful for this donation — this gift is a blessing to athletics and to the university overall.”

Max Smith attended Cumberland University in the early 1950s and was supportive of the university’s athletics, such as women’s basketball and golf, as well as other initiatives, such as scholarships, for many years.

“Our hope is to make this gift for the next 20 – 30 years,” said Rick Smith.
