The Master of Education (M.Ed.) program is designed to prepare licensure and non-licensure candidates as K-12 school leaders. This program is taught by faculty with deep experience as school leaders at every level, including charter schools, alternative schools and district offices. The program of study combines practicum courses in which candidates engage in the work of school leadership and classroom based course work focused on the practical and applied lessons of leaders in the field, and enriched by the quality and experience of the students we attract. Those who complete this program graduate not just prepared to be a school leader, but ready to lead in the field.
M.Ed. Mission
The mission of the Master of Education Physical Education and Sports program is to promote an environment of excellence in kinesiology and sport studies accomplished through instructional practices that combine professional knowledge, pedagogy, and leadership.
The Physical Education and Sports program is designed to provide opportunities to connect theory and practice via current research and information with a focus on the three advanced physical education teacher education standards of the SHAPE America, Society of Health and Physical Educators. These standards are: 1) Professional Knowledge, 2) Professional Practice, and 3) Professional Leadership. The program consists of a core of professional studies that develops the instructional decision-making of teachers and a focus core designed to enhance knowledge of subject matter, structure of disciplines, and appropriate modes of inquiry.
Program Goal
Cumberland University’s online M.Ed. in Physical Education and Sports emphasis prepares licensure and non-licensure candidates with advanced knowledge in Physical Education and Sports.
Add-On Endorsements
A variety of add-on endorsements may be added to current Tennessee teachers licenses with coursework and passing Praxis scores. You may customize your degree to include add-on endorsements, or can take only the necessary courses to complete an add-on endorsement. Add-on endorsements at CU include English as a Second Language, Special Education, Biology, Physical Education, and Mathematics. Please contact Cumberland’s certification officer for details.
