My Library
If you click into the Vise Library Catalog, you will see the option on the left hand side to “LOG IN.” You do not need to log in unless you would like to save items to the bookbag for access at a later time. Your username is your first and last name as we have it in the system. Your password is a randomly generated number, and you will need to contact the library to get this password the first time you use it. After you log in the first time, you can change your password to something easier to remember if you prefer. You will know that you are logged in when your name appears on the right side of the blue bar near the top of the screen. By clicking on the “My Account” link at the bottom of the column on the left side of the screen you are able to see the items you have checked out, any fines you owe, and reservations you have made.

Book bag

The Book bag feature is found in the Vise Library Catalog. Once you type in a search and see the results, you can click the box in the “Book bag” column to make a list of these items. Once you have checked the box beside all of the items of interest, click on the “Book bag” link in the column on the left of the screen to view these items. If you log into your account in the Vise Library Catalog following the instructions above, you will have the option to keep these items in your Book bag for you to come back to the next time you log into the library catalog.

Reserve an item

If you find an item that you would like in the Library Catalog, but it is already checked out, you may reserve it so that you are next in line when the item is returned. Only items that are already checked out are eligible to be reserved. Locate the item you would like to reserve and click on the title, which should be linked in blue. This brings you to the record for that item, and you will see the “Reserve This” icon near the middle of the screen on the right. Click on this icon then log into your library account using the instructions above. Next, enter the date you would like the item (if you would like it as soon as possible, enter today’s date). When the item is returned, we will notify you and you can pick up the item behind the front desk in the library.
Request Library Materials

Students living outside of Wilson and surrounding counties (Davidson, Rutherford, Cannon, Dekalb, Smith, Trousdale, and Sumner) may request that library books, videos, and other materials be mailed to them at no cost. Return postage is the responsibility of the student. Materials are considered late and subject to fines if postmarked after the due date. For articles that we own, we will email or fax copies to you depending on your preference. Photocopies of journal articles do not need to be returned.

Please note that this process will take at least ten business days, so plan accordingly. Make a request by filling out the form below. Contact Amber McKee with any questions you have concerning requesting materials.

Using Library Computers
The Vise Library provides computers primarily to facilitate access to locally and remotely held information resources. Use of library computers is restricted to students, faculty, and staff of Cumberland University. Patrons are expected to abide by all university computing policies posted at the library's computer workstations. Failure to do so can result in suspension of computer privileges. Patrons doing research take precedence over students using the Internet for entertainment.

Classroom Instruction

The Vise Library staff offers individual and group instruction on the use of the library catalog and the many electronic databases that are available. This instruction lasts approximately 30 minutes and familiarizes students and faculty on how to search for books and articles. If you would like more advanced instruction tailored to a particular discipline or research project, this can be provided as well. Instruction sessions need to be scheduled at least two weeks ahead of time to reserve the room in the library and give the librarian time to prepare. Please be prepared to provide multiple options in case we are unavailable during your ideal time.

Faculty may check out materials for four weeks and DVDs for one week.

Information Literacy

Definition: The Association of College and Research Libraries defines Information Literacy as the ability to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.”
Mission: The Vise Library’s Information Literacy Program strives to promote lifelong learning by teaching the members of the Cumberland University community how to locate, evaluate, and apply information effectively.  We believe that information literacy is essential in the success of the student both in and out of the classroom.  We emphasize the teaching of concepts over skills to ensure that students may apply information literacy in all areas of their life.
Goals:

  • The Vise Library’s Instruction Program will offer classes that support the curriculum of Cumberland University and foster information literacy as defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries.
  • Librarians will promote information literacy skills by providing assistance in the classroom, at the information desk, in the library, and online.
  • Librarians will work with faculty members to determine the best way to incorporate information literacy into their courses and programs.

Information Literacy will be continually assessed and adapted to the changing needs of the University and new developments in technology.

Information Literacy Instruction

Test Proctoring

The Doris & Harry Vise Library of Cumberland University is pleased to provide test proctoring as a public service. Our policies are as follows:

  • Faculty of Cumberland University and its affiliates may have a test proctored free of charge.
  • There is a $50.00 fee for non-affiliated institutions to compensate for administering and returning exams. This fee needs to be paid prior to or on the day the test will be administered. The library is only able to accept cash and is unable to make change.
  • The library can only test a maximum of three students per session.
  • The library will proctor written, emailed, or online exams. The library is unable to administer national standardized tests.
  • Testing needs to be scheduled a minimum of seven days in advance to allow for scheduling of a proctor and to ensure that the library has a proper space reserved for the test.
  • Exams will be administered during the library's operating hours on Monday through Friday. The library will follow the university’s calendar for scheduled holidays, closures, or special events. Due to a significantly increased workload and usage of the library facilities by faculty and students, the library is unable to proctor tests during finals week.
  • Scheduling of a test is the responsibility of the examinee (test taker) and must adhere to the professor’s/institution’s date for completion. All testing must be completed 30 minutes before the library closes. Appointments can be made in person, by phone or e-mail. Our contact information is as follows:

  • The examinee should arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the scheduled test time. If the examinee arrives 15 minutes past their scheduled appointment, the proctor may require them to reschedule their appointment at that time due to the library’s work load for that day. This will be at the discretion of the librarian on duty.
  • The library reserves the right to cancel or change the date of any proctored test. In the event of inclement weather, the library will follow the modified schedule (or closure) set by the university’s administration. The library will contact the examinee to reschedule.
  • The professor and/or institution is responsible for ensuring that the examination and other required exam materials are sent to the library and that they have been received.
  • Tests, exam instructions, and verification forms must be received a minimum of 48 hours prior to the scheduled test date.
  • The examinee needs to provide all supplies such as pens, pencils, calculator, paper, etc. to complete the test.
  • Library computer settings may not be modified to accommodate an online test. The library will provide a computer that has Microsoft Word and Internet access.
  • For security purposes, software may not be downloaded onto the library computers.
  • It is the responsibility of the professor/institution to ensure that the computing resources are adequate for their testing purposes.
  • At the time of testing, the student must provide current photo identification (state issued driver’s license or ID, passport, military ID, student ID) and the name on the identification must match the name on the testing materials.
  • At the conclusion of the exam, the proctor will return the exam to the testing institution/professor via the U.S. Postal Service or as a scanned e-mail attachment for non-affiliated institutions. On campus professors may either pick up the completed test at the library or they may have the test returned via inter-office mail. The library is unable to arrange for UPS or FedEx pickup.
  • The library cannot assume responsibility for lost information on any electronic test that may result from hardware failure, server failure, power outages, or other unforeseen technical malfunctions.
  • The library cannot assume responsibility for completed tests that are not received by the testing institution. The test taker must contact their professor/institution to determine if the completed test was received.
  • To avoid being involved in the grading process and to maintain confidentiality, proctors are unable to grade tests upon completion.
  • The library is not responsible for the content of exams that are sent to us or for completed tests once they have been mailed.
  • The proctor will not monitor a student continuously during the exam, but will check on the student periodically.
  • Proctors will strictly adhere to all testing parameters set by the professor/institution. Any violation of the testing parameters or suspected cheating by the examinee will be reported to the professor/institution and the proctor will not verify completion of the test.
  • The use of cell phones, tablets, laptops, or other electronic devices are not allowed during testing unless it is part of the testing parameters allowed by the professor/institution.
  • As a courtesy to library patrons and staff, test takers may not bring children or other guests when testing.
  • Pets (aside from registered service animals) are not allowed in the library.

Room Reservations

General Notes
  • Library meeting rooms are available for study groups of two or more people.
  • Meeting rooms are available for impromptu group meetings when not reserved.
  • Some of the meeting rooms can be reserved by groups for up to three hours.
  • Meeting rooms can be reserved through the Library Information Desk. You can come by in person, call 547-1299 or e-mail library@cumberland.edu.  You will be asked the reservation time, number of people in your group, and contact information for at least one person. Room reservations must be made at least one hour in advance.
  • Reservations will be forfeited if the group is more than 15 minutes late.
  • The Library reserves the right to cancel your reservation if needed, but will try to contact you in advance and relocate your group to another room if possible. Administrative staff meetings and testing services have priority over all other reservation requests.
  • When using a library meeting room you are responsible for returning the furniture to its original arrangement if moved, and cleaning up all of your trash. Library food policies apply.
The Library is not responsible for belongings left in the meeting rooms or any other area.
