What is the Tennessee Promise Program?

Tennessee Promise is both a scholarship and mentoring program focused on increasing the number of students that attend college throughout Tennessee. While removing the financial burden is key, a critical component of Tennessee Promise is the individual guidance each participant will receive from a mentor who will assist the student as he or she navigates the college admission process. This is accomplished primarily via mandatory meetings that students must attend in order to remain eligible for the program.

Who is eligible for Tennessee Promise?

Any high school senior who graduates from a Tennessee eligible high school or completes a Tennessee home school program can apply for the Promise Scholarship.

What does the Tennessee Promise mean to CU?

In the fall of 2018, Cumberland University reached record enrollment with 2,405 total students, the most in the schools 177 year history. This consistent growth is due largely to more students now having the opportunity to afford a college education.

Cumberland University President Dr. Paul C. Stumb is grateful to be able to give high school seniors an opportunity to continue their education with the Tennessee Promise scholarship, which affords capable students the chance earn a 2-year Associate’s Degree with no out of pocket expenses.

“Since Cumberland began accepting the Tennessee Promise scholarship in 2015, our enrollment has increased appreciably,” said Stumb. “We are pleased to see many students take advantage of this opportunity and to help transform so many young lives in a positive manner.”

Students that otherwise would not get the opportunity to attend a private, liberal arts university are given that chance at Cumberland. In return, these students are helping to create a more dynamic, bustling campus environment at CU. Cumberland is a proud supporter of the Tennessee Promise program, and will be for years to come.

Cumberland University and the Tennessee Promise scholarship allow students to earn a 2-year associate degree, tuition free. Cumberland also makes it easy for you to transition directly into a 4-year baccalaureate degree program.Once a student has earned an associate degree they are automatically admitted into a baccalaureate degree program at Cumberland University.
