School of Education - Teacher Education Process

The Teacher Education Program (TEP) consists of a five-step process designed to help students meet teacher licensure requirements step-by-step. The process includes:
 

Acceptance to the School of Education

Checkpoint 1. Students will be accepted to the School of Education with a suitable High School GPA and ACT scores and an accepted application to Cumberland University.
 

Teacher Education Phase I - Professional Education Coursework

Checkpoint 2. Students must meet all necessary requirements before being recommended for admission to TEP I: Professional Education Coursework.

Teacher Education Phase II - Professional Student-Teaching

Checkpoint 3. Students must meet all necessary requirements before being recommended for admission to TEP II: Professional Student-Teaching.


Successful Completion of Student-Teaching

Checkpoint 4. Students will successfully complete student-teaching if they successfully meet the following requirements:

  • Submit for review (not share) their LiveText portfolio to the "coecuadmin" account on LiveText and pass the Final Evaluation according to the rubric included in the portfolio.
  • Achieve adequate scores on Mid- and End-of-Semester evaluations of General Education Performance Standards;
  • Achieve adequate student-teaching evaluations by Cooperating Teachers, other school personnel, and University Supervisors; and
  • Successfully complete a final formal interview with the Teacher Education Committee.

Program Completion

Checkpoint 5. Candidates will be recommended to the Tennessee Department of Education for initial licensure upon successful completion of the following:
  • All requirements for the four prior steps in TEP progression including the Student-Teaching professional semester.
  • A major at Cumberland University that meets Teacher Education Program requirements.
  • Proper application procedures to include the Application for Tennessee Teaching License and official transcripts from all institutions attended.
