Cumberland University's School of Education and Public Service (SoE & PS) is a candidate for accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). In their words, "NCATE is the profession's mechanism to help establish high-quality teacher preparations."

The School of Education and Public Service is proud of its long-held regional reputation for consistently preparing excellent practitioners for careers in their chosen fields. We share a commitment to staying ahead of changes in policy and practice to maintain our reputation for excellence, and to deliver an education based on best current practices and a research-based body of knowledge that enables our graduates to serve their constituencies and communities professionally.

As a result, school faculty are continually monitoring our programs for any needed changes. Students and prospective students should check with faculty and this website regularly to be informed of changes.

The School of Education and Public Service's conceptual framework incorporates national standards for the development of new practitioners into our standing goal of creating caring, competent and qualified professionals. For future teachers, the knowledge, disposition and skill requirements represented in the colored boxes reflect components of Cumberland University's mission to create competent, caring, qualified professional educators. The arrows between represent the interconnectedness of the various components of those dimensions. The arrows also communicate that a professional educator is well-versed in each of the domains. (The full text of our conceptual framework can be found here.)

Many Cumberland students major in programs offered by the School of Education and Public Service. We offer five undergraduate and two graduate programs. Some of our programs prepare candidates for careers in the athletics, health and wellness fields; some of our programs lead to teacher and school adminstrator licensure, and one prepares candidates for careers in public service management.

Individuals currently holding a baccalaureate degree in another academic discipline may seek Tennessee licensure by completing a second baccalaureate through Cumberland University.
