1. How large is the campus?
The campus is on about 50 acres in a residential neighborhood near the main business districts of Lebanon, TN.
 
2. How many students attend the University?
Our fall 2007 enrollment was 1,335 students with 906 full-time undergraduates, 162 part-time undergraduates, and 267 graduate students. 

3. What year was Cumberland University founded?
1842 

4. Does Cumberland have a religious affiliation?
No, Cumberland is a private, independent university. However there are multiple religious clubs and organizations which are active on campus. 

5. What major cities are nearby?
Lebanon is a fast-growing community with many opportunities for dining and entertainment. However, Nashville is just located 30 minutes from campus where some students go for additional nightlife, dining, and entertainment opportunities.
 
6. What are the current expenses for tuition, room and board? Does an out-of-state fee exist for non-residents?  For the 2007-2008 academic year, the tuition and fees per semester are as follows:

7. Are students required to live on campus or purchase a meal plan?

It is highly recommended that all freshman students live on campus. Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. If you live on campus you must purchase a meal plan (part of room & board). However, you may choose whether you would like to have 14 or 19 meals per week.

8. What types of financial assistance are available?
At least 86% of Cumberland students receive some type of financial assistance with average awards of $8,000 to resident students and $5-6,000 to those not living on campus. The award comes in a package that may include a scholarship, grant, low-interest loan and part-time employment. The type of package and amount of assistance depend on your financial need, the amount of funds available to the University, and the number of Cumberland students who qualify for assistance.

9. What is the total number of volumes in the library?
Vise Library, completed in 1989, houses approximately 40,000 volumes with about 3,000 new items being added each year. There are over 400 periodicals to which the library subscribes. In addition, students have access to a variety of databases and CD-ROMs, including the on-line database EBSCO host that allows students to view and print the full text of articles from thousands of periodicals. The library houses the Learning Center@Cumberland University, where students can come to receive tutorial assistance. A new Music Listening Lab was added in 1998. Ten listening stations and a variety of music CDs are available there.

10. What is the minority population of the University?
In recent years, the minority population has been close to 17% combined African-American, American Indian, Asian, and Hispanic.

11. Where are the students from geographically?
Although Cumberland students are primarily from Tennessee , they also come from 27 states and 31 foreign countries.

12. Are there tutorial services available for students?
Yes, the University offers peer tutors free of charge. You should request a tutor in the Office of Academic Affairs or with the Assistant Dean for Students. The University also offers the Academic and Career Enrichment Center (ACE) for assistance with various subjects including math, accounting, history, and with writing papers in any class or discipline.
13. In what intercollegiate sports does the University participate?
Men's: Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross-country, Cycling, Football, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, and Wrestling. Women's: Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross-country, Cycling, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, and Volleyball.

14. What athletic association is Cumberland University a member of and what divisions are included?
Cumberland belongs to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Mid-South and Tran South Conferences. All sports are in NAIA Division I.

15. Are there registration and/or orientation sessions for freshman and new transfers? If so, when are they scheduled?
Yes, there is a required registration/orientation for all new freshmen conducted by the combined offices of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. 

We require all freshmen to participate in a one-day registration/orientation session titled "Welcome to the Dawg House."  Students can choose from sessions that are scheduled in June, July, or early August. At these registration/orientation sessions you have the opportunity to meet with current students, faculty, and staff. You select your courses for the fall semester and learn about your University. Dates for the registration/orientation sessions for students who will enter in Fall of 2008 will be announced in early 2008. We will also have a transfer night to accommodate transfer student registration on a date to be announced in early 2008.  You may select which day you would like to attend. We offer separate sessions for parents; at least one parent is encouraged to attend. 

16. Can freshmen have cars on campus?
Yes, freshmen can bring cars to campus. However, the student parking permit states which parking lot you may park in, depending on whether you live on campus or commute.
17. What Fine Arts programs are offered to students?
Cumberland has a variety of opportunities for students to perform in the arts, from the Jazz Band, the Jazz Combo, a Marching Band, the Cumberland Choral to drama, dance and an art studio.

18. How many students live on campus?
For the 2007-2008 academic year there are over 400 students living on campus.

19. How many dormitories does the school provide?
There are currently two male dormitories: Edward Potter, which sleeps 106 residents and Justin Potter, which sleeps 60 residents, a female dormitory, Mary White, which sleeps 86 residents, and the Cumberland Commons I & II, which are two story town homes reserved for upper-classmen.

20. What services are provided to all students living on campus?
All dormitory rooms are equipped with phone jacks, cable access and are hard-wired for access to both the campus intranet network and the Internet. You would need to bring your own computer in order to hook-up in the dorm and arrange for your own telephone service.

21. Are there any fraternities or sororities on campus?
Yes, there are three fraternities: Kappa Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon (currently inactive); and two sororities: Alpha Sigma Tau & Alpha Omicron Pi.

22. What activities and intramural sports are provided on campus?
Cumberland offers yoga, Taekwondo, abdominal classes, basketball, volleyball, and softball leagues, indoor floor hockey, flag football, and paintball wars, just to name a few. In addition, Cumberland University has an agreement with a local fitness center which provides an opportunity for our students to utilize that facility.

23. How many clubs and organizations are on campus?
There are over 40 clubs and organizations on campus.

24. Is the University accredited?
Cumberland University is chartered by the State of Tennessee and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

25. Does Cumberland have any noted graduates?
Yes, United States Secretary of State and Nobel Peace Prize winner Cordell Hull; the "father of political science" John W. Burgess; 13 governors; 10 US Senators; more than 80 members of the House of Representatives; and two Supreme Court justices, to name a few.
