Phoenix Ball offers live online auction, unique highlights

Cumberland University’s Phoenix Ball is going mobile. With only a few days remaining until the festivities begin, University officials have announced that this year’s auction will be live via the web for guests at the Ball and for supporters unable to attend.

Cumberland is partnering with ClickBid to offer completely paperless auction bidding as well as electronic registration and checkout for the event. Prior to the Ball, interested friends and alumni will be able to bid on all auction items by registering at the auction website. At the event, guests will be able to use their personal smartphones or utilize iPad stations manned by volunteers to bid on items. This simple and easy-to-use system will make this special evening even more fun.

This year’s silent and live auctions feature more than 60 items. Highlights include:

  • A Night at the Capitol – Be among the first to experience the new Capitol Theatre! Enjoy a fabulous night of entertainment with 25-30 of your closest friends at the newly refurbished theatre, set to reopen in June. This wonderful package includes choice of classic film, catering by Sammy B’s at the Mill, and a $150 gift certificate from All American Wine & Spirits.
  • The Memorial Hall Birdhouse – This incredible, one-of-kind birdhouse was handcrafted from wood by Mr. J. Robin Carr of Robin’s Nestings. An exact replica of Cumberland University’s historic Memorial Hall, Mr. Carr spent countless hours making this representation of one of Tennessee’s most beautiful buildings. This work of art will make a wonderful addition to your outdoor garden or indoor garden room.

Items for the Silent and Live Auctions can be previewed and bid on online at To receive your bidder number prior to the Ball, call the Office of Advancement at (615) 547-1269 or register at the auction website.

Just two days prior to the Ball at 7 p.m. on May 30, Mrs. Jean Ellen Baker and Dr. Scott Baker are hosting the 2013 Patrons’ Party at their beautiful home. This spring garden party by the pool will include live jazz performed by the Nashville Predators’ hockey organist Kyle Hankins with accompaniment by Rick Malkin, delicious entrees, and signature cocktails.

The 30th Annual Phoenix Ball takes place on June 1 and returns to the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center on the campus of Cumberland University. The cocktail reception sponsored by Bone McAllester Norton PLLC begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner to begin at 7 p.m., followed by dancing to the Craig Duncan Orchestra.

This year, the Ball will be followed by the Late Night Party, which will begin at around 10 p.m. The Late Night Party includes dancing, a full service bar, a late night buffet, and music from DJ Louis Lee.
