Merchant is a contemporary painter of the Tennessee landscape, both suburban and rural. Working primarily with oil on canvas, he often combines drawing media such as charcoal, graphite, or pastel in the process.
Merchant holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Middle Tennessee State University. He has enjoyed a long career in painting and in the operation of several area galleries.
“I have been involved in the art world on many different levels,” said Merchant.
Merchant served as preparator for Zimmerman-Saturn Gallery and as co-director of Willis-Robinson Gallery in Nashville. He has been a visiting artist at Vanderbilt University and has shown his work in juried exhibits regionally.
Merchant is the manager of Moxie Art Supply and Studio School, an art supply and instructional venue in Murfreesboro that offers art classes, camps, and weekend workshops. He recently exhibited his work at the Rutherford County Center for the Arts and at Motlow State Community College (Moore County campus).
