Cumberland University has appointed Nashville attorney Stacey A. Garrett to spearhead its growth of online and continuing professional education programs, one of the institution’s fastest expanding areas.
Garrett will be the university’s Vice President for Online and Professional Studies, effective July 1. She will continue to serve as the University's General Counsel through the Nashville law firm Bone McAllester Norton PLLC, where she is a founding member and chairs the firm’s board of directors. Garrett and the firm have represented the university for a number of years and Garrett’s new position is the product of a partnership between the two.
Cumberland University President Dr. Harvill Eaton said Garrett’s appointment is a major step in the institution’s drive to move its brand of services to the forefront in the region’s emergence as a national leader in business, health care, and new technology businesses. Her appointment punctuates the deliberate expansion of Cumberland’s footprint and services into the Nashville Metropolitan area.
“Stacey has a genuine appreciation of the vision for Cumberland,” Eaton said in announcing the special appointment. “Her credentials and her passion for the mission of our institution and its role in the new Nashville and middle Tennessee region will be tremendous assets, helping Cumberland reach new levels of distinction.”
Through her legal work, Garrett has gained extensive experience in higher education. Moreover, she is highly regarded for her contributions to business and community in the Nashville region. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Duke University in 1990, and her Juris Doctor from Tulane University Law School in 1993.
Garrett’s immediate goals will be to address the growing needs of the greater Nashville Metropolitan area, and to identify and develop new program offerings. Responding to the growing demands of both online programming and professional studies will be among her top priorities. She will balance her responsibilities between offices in Cumberland University’s new Mt. Juliet site and at Bone McAllester Norton PLLC in Nashville.
“It is a privilege to have the opportunity of working with an institution whose reputation continues to leap forward every year,” said Garrett. “Great things are in store for Cumberland and I am excited that I will be a part of it.”
Charles W. Bone, Chairman of Bone McAllester Norton PLLC said, “We are very pleased and proud of Stacey and fully supportive of her decision to undertake this position with Cumberland. Based on her success with our firm as a co-founder, we have no doubt that she will succeed in her new role. This partnership with Cumberland represents the very type of strategic relationships which Bone McAllester Norton PLLC seeks to foster.”
