Memorial service for Dr. Phillips


A memorial service has been planned for Dr. Ray Phillips, former president of Cumberland University. Phillips passed away April 29, he was 89.

The service will take place on Sunday, June 10 at 3:00 pm in the University’s Baird Chapel with a reception to follow in Phillips Dining Hall, the facility named in honor of the former president and his wife.

Dr. Phillips served Cumberland University as Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1983-86. He then was elected to the Board of Trust and served from 1986-91 before serving as President from 1991-94.

Dr. Harvill Eaton, current president of Cumberland University, and former congressman Bob Clement, who also served as president of the University, will serve as hosts for the service. Dr. Phillips served as Vice President for Academic Affairs during Clement’s administration before serving as president. Congressman Clement will deliver the eulogy at the memorial service.
