Former Board of Trust chairman dies
Dr. Joe F. Bryant, former chairman of the Cumberland University Board of Trust, died over the weekend after an extended illness, he was 78.
“I am truly saddened by the passing of a longtime friend and former colleague,” said Dr. Harvill Eaton, president of Cumberland University. “He had a passion not only for Cumberland but the Lebanon community as well. He will be missed.”
Born in 1932, Bryant was raised in Newbern, Tenn. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee – Martin. He continued his education at the University of Memphis where he graduated from Medical School in 1955. He owned a Family Practice in Lebanon and performed general surgery at University Medical Center. Bryant owned and managed a local television station. He was named the “Tennessee Outstanding Young Man of 1965” by the United States Jaycees and was a Phoenix Award recipient.
Bryant was married to Patsy “Pat” O’Neil Bryant, a 1967 graduate of Cumberland. Together they had two children, a daughter Laura Honeyman and a son Frank Bryant, and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 11:00-2:00 pm, and also from 4:00-8:00, at the Partlow Funeral Chapel in Lebanon. Visitation on Thursday, October 13, 2011, will be 4:00-8:00 pm, at Partlow. Visitation on Friday, October 14, 2011, will be at Partlow from 11:00 am until the funeral service. The service will be held at 1:00 pm at the Lebanon First United Methodist Church.
