Cumberland University's CMENC Chapter Brings Home Award

Cumberland University Music Students Attending the CEMC Conference.

Cumberland University’s newly re-formed chapter of Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC) has been busy developing ways by which they can encourage future students to join them in their passion for music.

During the fall semester CMENC members developed a concept by which they can communicate and learn from area music teachers. Their objective was to promote the study, teaching and making of music.

“The students had a strong desire to develop an initiative that encouraged young people to pursue music.” said Dr. Michele Paynter Paise, Assistant Professor of Music. “The end result was a successful professional speaker series designed to give students a true sense of being involved in the study, teaching and creation of music.”

Called the “Music Teachers Talking: A Discussion Group for Future Music Teachers” Music professionals from the area are invited to visit the Cumberland University campus one evening a month for the purpose of giving presentations geared toward various teaching issues, including classroom management, working with parents, working within a budget, and the care and maintenance of instruments. Students are able to ask many questions, which prompt further discussions in their music education courses. Music teachers of various experience levels who teach instrumental, choral, and elementary music have participated in the discussion group.

The program has proved to be a valuable addition to CMENC members and Cumberland University’s music department as a whole.

The National Association for Music Education, among the world's largest arts education organizations, marked its centennial in 2007 as the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. Through membership of more than 75,000 active, retired, and pre-service music teachers, and with 60,000 honor students and supporters, MENC serves millions of students nationwide through activities at all teaching levels, from preschool to graduate school.
