Phoenix Players to Present The Foreigner

Lebanon, TN – The Cumberland University Phoenix Players are proud to bring you The Foreigner by Larry Shue, winner of two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production.  This hilarious comedy is set to open this Thursday, October 29th at 7:30pm and run through Sunday, November 1st.  Sunday’s performance will be a special matinee performance slated to begin at 2:30pm. All performances will take place at the June and Bill Heydel Fine Arts Center at the campus of Cumberland University.

The Foreigner is based in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by "Froggy" LeSeuer, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time "Froggy" has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So "Froggy," before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should—the evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the minister's pretty fiancée is pregnant; and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn't understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the "bad guys," and the "good guys" emerge triumphant.*

A wonderful variety of CU students make up the cast of The Foreigner, with Martin Cooper set to play “Froggy,” Nick Williams as Charlie, Brendan Tramel and Rin Taylor as Betty, Charlie Hodge and Chelsie Hochradel-Raines as Catherine, Jerry Shanes as David, alumnus Chris Byrd as Owen, and Mindy Spears as Ellard.

Tickets for The Foreigner are $7.00 for Adults and $5.00 for seniors and children 12 and under.  CU Students are admitted free.
