The Cumberland University School of Music & the Arts will present "The Fantasticks" at the June & Bill Heydel Fine Arts Center on the campus of CU from Thursday, April 3 through Sunday, April 6.
A 1960 musical by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones, "The Fantasticks" tells the story of two fathers who put up a wall between their homes to ensure that their children will one day fall in love -- because they know that children always do what their parents forbid. Once the children do fall in love, however, they discover their fathers' plot and separate to venture off and experience the world. The lessons they learn in the real world help them to make an informed decision about their feelings for one another.
Cast members in the Cumberland University production include: Chris Cooper as El Gallo, Shawn Savage as Matt, Emily Keene-Reyes as Luisa, Brandon Eldridge as Hucklebee, Mason Smith as Bellomy, Gromyko Weir as Henry, Thomas West as Mortimer and Chelsie Hochradel and Megan Hunt as The Mutes.
The original off-Broadway production of "The Fantasticks" ran for 17,162 performances, making it the world's longest running musical. The poetic book and breezy score, including such familiar songs as "Try to Remember" helped make the show durable. Many productions followed, including television and film versions.
The Cumberland University production of "The Fantasticks" will be held nightly at 7 p.m. on April 3 through April 5. A special Sunday matinee performance will be held on Sunday, April 6 at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for children. Cumberland University faculty, staff, students and CUFAC (Cumberland University Fine Arts Council) will be admitted free with a valid University ID. To make reservations, please contact the Heydel Fine Arts Center Box Office at 615.547.1380.
