Prior to joining Cumberland, Dr. Swisshelm worked with a major management-consulting firm evaluating computer-based financial systems for a multi-state transportation authority, as software director of a systems integration firm, and as the head of a division of a major wholesaler that provided computer systems for the firm's clients.

Dr. Swisshelm began her career as a chemist and holds a B.S. from Chatham College with a double-major in chemistry and mathematics (magna cum laude) and a M.S. in physical chemistry from the University of Kentucky. She eventually "saw the light" and earned her Ph.D. in Computer Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University. She is also certified as a Master Instructor for Microsoft Office and as a Novell Network Administrator. Her research interests center on fractals and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Swisshelm is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Mu Delta, Association for Computing Machinery, American Chemical Society, Institute for Electric and Electronic Engineers, The Computer Society and American Association of University Professors.
