Dr. Scott T. Massey, serves as Professor of Leadership and Director of the Cumberland Center for Strategic Leadership and Regional Development. Dr. Massey comes to Cumberland from The Meridian Institute, a national leadership center which he founded and served as President and CEO. Dr. Massey is a strategist, author, and innovator and with 20 years of experience as a non-profit President and CEO. He is the immediate past President and CEO of The Indiana Humanities Council, founding President of The Learning Collaborative, and Founder and Chairman of Leadership Indiana.
Dr. Massey holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Vanderbilt University, with a focus on cybernetics and the philosophy of science and logic. He is the author of Renewing American Culture: The Pursuit of Happiness, and author of over 50 articles and speeches, and a book of poetry. He serves on national advisory boards with the Council on Competitiveness, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Indiana University, and Ball State University.
As President and CEO of The Learning Collaborative, Dr. Massey directed the creation of a smart technology to improve K – 12 student performance through improved instruction. The smartDesktop knowledge management tool created by the Collaborative is now managed and operated by the Indiana Department of Education as its primary online instructional service statewide.
As President of the Indiana Humanities Council, Dr. Massey led a statewide needs assessment and strategic planning initiative to identify how to advance the state’s economy, education, and culture. Through this study with the Governor’s Office, he founded and Chaired Leadership Indiana, a network of 5,000 of Indiana’s corporate, government, education, and nonprofit leaders. At the Council, Dr. Massey also oversaw the Council’s grants programs that served the state’s universities, museums, and cultural institutions. Dr. Massey was honored by Governor Mitch Daniels with a “Sagamore of the Wabash” award for his service to Indiana.
In the area of philanthropy, Dr. Massey is a special strategic advisor and a member of the Board of Directors of the English Bonner Hamilton Foundation and the English Foundation, which together manage over one half billion dollars for philanthropic purposes. Working with the Kellogg Foundation, the Michigan Council of Foundations, and Lilly Endowment, Dr. Massey created Habits of the Heart, a trademarked educational program in philanthropy for young people.
At the request of the Ford Foundation, Dr. Massey served as Chairman for the national Summit on the future of the humanities at the Aspen Institute. The Summit led to an international conference on the future of the humanities and the publication of a book, which was launched by the Library of Congress in Washington and Lincoln Center in New York. The book became the basis for a national PBS documentary, which was premiered at the Heartland Film Festival, and for which Dr. Massey was nominated for an Emmy.
Prior to his activities in Indiana, Dr. Massey worked with Leonard Bernstein and The Bernstein Education through the Arts Fund to create and found The Leonard Bernstein Center, a national center on education. Dr. Massey led the national research to develop the Bernstein Center’s trademarked Artful Learning® model; served as principal writer and editor of the Center’s four-level staff development books, created and managed the Center’s national grant program; and served as Founding President of the organization. At the Center, Dr. Massey worked with a distinguished national Board, which included Peter Jennings, David Rockefeller, Lauren Bacall, J. Carter Brown, and Yo Yo Ma, among others.
