Dr. Kohal was named Associate Dean and Associate Professor of the Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing at Cumberland University in 2009. Dr. Kohal received her B.A. from Western Illinois University, her M.S.N. in Psychiatric Nursing from Vanderbilt University, and her D.N.P. from Case Western Reserve University. During her nursing career she has focused on practicing and teaching Psychiatric Nursing.
Dr. Kohal’s most recent teaching experience was at Hawaii Pacific University in Kaneohe, Hawaii. She was coordinator of the Altered Mental Health course from 1995-2009. She was also the coordinator and founder of the Forensic Certificate Program from 1999-2009. She continued to practice as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in various positions in Psychiatric facilities in Hawaii. She also provided individual, family and marital therapy in Private Practice.
Prior to moving to Hawaii, Dr. Kohal taught at Illinois Wesleyan University where she taught the psychiatric nursing curriculum and taught university elective course titled “Abuse in America” and “Chemical Dependency”.
She has numerous presentations, workshops and publications related to her specialty area. Her dissertation research was titled “Descriptive Study of Fitness Interventions for Persons Found Unfit to Stand Trial in State/Psychiatric/Forensic Hospitals in the US. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Int., American Psychiatric Nurses Association where she ran for President last year.
