BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Smith joined Cumberland University in August, 2012.  Dr. Smith serves as head of the Special Education program and teaches special education and other professional education courses.  Prior to joining Cumberland University, Dr. Smith recently retired from Tennessee Technological University where she served as the Director of Teacher Education and held rank in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.  While at TTU, she taught courses in literacy, professional education, special education, and gifted education.  Dr. Smith also taught twenty years in Overton County Schools as a Special Education Resource Teacher and the system-wide Gifted Education Program Coordinator.  Dr. Smith is a Reading Specialist and holds endorsements in elementary education and special education.  She is an active storyteller and co author of professional textbooks.  Dr. Smith’s research interests include literacy studies, collaborative teaching, teacher preparation models, and assessment.
