What is counseling?
Counseling is a process that helps people work out personal, academic or vocational problems. At the Counseling Center, you can explore difficulties you are having and look for resolution of these problems. Through this process, people often gain increased awareness, independence and effectiveness in the pursuit of personal goals. These services are paid for by your student fees, so take advantage of the services offered.
Personal Counseling
The Counseling Center staff is available to discuss any personal or emotional difficulties in complete confidentiality. Services include individual and group counseling and range from counseling for personal and professional problems to crisis intervention. The concerns that students discuss with us include relationship and family issues, roommate problems, drug or alcohol use, self-esteem and problems with eating, to name just a few.
Individual Therapy
Student Counseling Services provides short-term (usually between 6 and 8 sessions), intermittent therapy for students struggling with a variety of personal issues. Academic concerns, relationship concerns, low self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness, disordered eating, sexual identity concerns, multicultural issues and anxiety are just some of the issues that can be addressed confidentially in therapy.
Couples and Family Therapy
Student Counseling Services provides therapy for couples and, in some cases, for families. Healthy communication, mutual regard and expectations are common themes. As with individual therapy, a short-term therapeutic model is followed with 6 to 8 sessions being the norm.
Additional Information
All counseling is confidential. No information is released to anyone without written consent. If you would like to find out if you could benefit from therapy or you would like to schedule an initial assessment, please contact us at 547.1397.
Student Counseling Services offers a variety of groups for students. Group therapy is often the treatment of choice for many issues. Group is a unique opportunity to experience a type of treatment that cannot be found in many mental health settings. We offer three different group treatment formats:
1. Interpersonal Process Groups are for those who will benefit from sharing experiences, giving and receiving support/feedback and experimenting with new interpersonal behaviors in a safe environment.
2. Theme Groups are for those who share common experiences with others, which may enhance a group's cohesion and effectiveness.
3. Psychoeducational Groups are for those who want the opportunity to be educated, to increase knowledge of resources and to build coping skills in certain areas of their lives.
Those interested in group treatment will meet with a staff counselor to assess the match between individual needs and available groups. Occasionally, last-minute scheduling changes occur in times and leaders. No set limit exists on the number of group sessions in which a person may participate. Groups are free of charge and are confidential.
The Stress Management Program (SMP) enables students to learn the skills necessary to relieve the negative consequences of stress. Through various relaxation techniques, students can learn to identify stressors and relax their mind and body. The SMP provides information and practice for these relaxation techniques.
The Student Counseling Services Outreach and Prevention Program seeks to improve the emotional and interpersonal well-being of all Cumberland University students through education and awareness programming.
Please contact Outreach and Prevention Services to learn how training can be provided for you and your department.
