Head coach Dwayne Deering and the Cumberland University VolleyDawgs are a perennial powerhouse in the TranSouth Conference, regularly finishing among the top teams in the conference. Deering, who has overseen the volleyball program for the past 22 years, has led the team to five conference championships and is a five-time conference coach of the year.

Members of the VolleyDawg squad claimed a number of individual honors last season. Senior libero/outside hitter Rachel Vanderburg was named to the All-TranSouth Second Team, and a number of her teammates received Player of the Week honors from conference officials throughout the course of the season.

Throughout Deering’s lengthy career at Cumberland, all four-year players have graduated, and the team’s commitment to academics continued during the 2006-2007 season. In all, 10 team members were named TranSouth Scholar-Athletes: Macey Denney, Rachel Peoples, Michelle Wright, Laurel Conrey, Ivory Leonard, Mallory Cook, Tracy Smallwood, Amanda Twomey, Megan Corbin and Vanderburg.
