LADY BULLDOGS MAKE HISTORY IN '07
NAIA National Tournament Runner-Up, Best Finish in Program History

Thanks to a spectacular run in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament, Cumberland University's Lady Bulldogs earned National Runner-Up honors after a hard-fought, physical championship game against the Lady Eagles of Lambuth University.

The Lady Bulldogs started the game with the same spark that propelled them into the final round, jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead over Lambuth. The momentum later shifted to the Lady Eagles, who led 26-22 at halftime. Lambuth showed no sign of slowing as the second half continued, and the Lady Eagles eventually defeated the injury-plagued Lady Bulldogs, 63-50, for the first national crown in Lambuth's history.

The third-seeded Lady Bulldogs made history as well, advancing farther than any Cumberland University women's team before them. En route to the National Runner-Up finish, the Lady Bulldogs toppled tournament favorites Lewis-Clark and Vanguard. In fact, CU handed Vanguard (30-1) its only loss of the season, 68-64, in the semifinal round.

Fans welcome the Lady Bulldogs back to CU following the NAIA Tournament.
Lynn Bogle, Voice of the Lady Bulldogs on WANT-FM 98.9, described the Lady Bulldogs' tournament run as "marvelous."

"This team went places no other Lady Bulldog program had gone before," Bogle said, expressing his personal admiration for the CU coaching staff, players and the team's six seniors. "This trip carries some very special memories that will be very special for a long, long time."

Cumberland University President Dr. Harvill C. Eaton and Athletic Director Pat Lawson also expressed admiration for CU Head Coach Clint Mason, his team and his staff for their dedication and hard work -- both in the classroom and out.

"I think it says a lot about the character of these young women," Lawson said. "They came into this tournament as a third-seed and fought their way to the title round. We're proud of the way they performed, the way they carried themselves on and off the court and the way they represented Cumberland University."

"To say that I'm proud would be an understatement. This team will go down in history at Cumberland University and rightfully so," added Eaton. "They've proven that hard work can take you anywhere you want to go. When I entered the arena for the championship game, looked around and saw so many Lady Bulldog fans, I was ecstatic. Cumberland University loves the Wilson County community, and we are blessed to have such support."
Students greet the Lady Bulldogs as they return to campus.
