CU Tops Rival Martin Methodist on Senior Day

Monday, April 7 was "Senior Day" for the Cumberland University tennis teams, and the seniors went out on top by blowing out conference rival Martin Methodist College. Following the lead of other teams on campus, the CU tennis teams brought back "Senior Day" in an effort to honor the five graduating senior tennis players.

The day started off with a special presentation by CU Athletic Director Pat Lawson to each of the seniors. Four men -- Roman Shkurupiy (Russia), Felipe Novello (Brazil), Edgar Galea (Venezuela) and Shayan Mirhosseini (Canada) -- joined the lone senior women's team member, Kristen Goodman of Murfreesboro, for this special day.

Both the men's and women's teams showed why they are nationally ranked by defeating Martin Methodist, 8-1. The wins brought the men to 16-2 overall and the women to 16-1 overall. The men's and women's teams are ranked No. 21 and No. 26 in the nation, respectively.

CU Players Earn National Rankings

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently released the spring national singles and doubles rankings, and a number of Cumberland University players were listed among the tops in the nation for the first ranking period. The ITA ranks the top 50 singles and top 25 doubles teams in the country periodically throughout the spring season.

Roman Skurupiy is currently ranked No. 21 in singles, and senior co-captain Shayan Mirhosseini is ranked No. 24 in the nation. The Bulldogs were also represented in the national doubles rankings with Roman Shkurupiy and senior co-captain Edgar Galea ranked No. 8 in the country. With the team currently ranked No. 20 in the nation and the impressive results of these players, the Bulldogs look to improve on their 13-2 record and finish the season strong.

Congratulations to CU Head Tennis Coach Bill Riddle, who recently reached a milestone with his 100th career victory at Cumberland University when the CU men defeated D1 team Alabama A&M, 9-0, during a road trip. Riddle reached 100 in just five years at CU and brought his overall record as a college head coach to 126-79.

Nationally Ranked CU Bulldogs Top Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 6-1

Despite finishing at No. 17 in the nation with a first-round loss in the national championships, the Cumberland University Men's Tennis team entered the 2008 pre-season NAIA national poll last week ranked No. 14 in the nation. It appeared that the ranking only strengthened the Bulldogs' confidence as they entered this weekend's tennis matches.

Nashboro Village Athletic Club played host to the Bulldogs on Saturday as they blasted through King College, 8-1.

"Having the rankings come out prior to this weekend's match really gave the guys a mental boost, and I think it showed on the court against King and Western Kentucky this weekend," CU Head Tennis Coach Bill Riddle said.

Playing a late match Saturday night, and then turning around and playing early on Sunday did not seem to affect the Bulldogs as they took on Division I foe Western Kentucky University on the road in Bowling Green, Ky. Western came into the match with Cumberland riding high themselves off a huge 7-0 pounding over Belmont University on Saturday night. With both the Bulldogs and the Hilltoppers having won the day before, the stage was set for a battle ... and a battle they had.

The day started off with a quick split in doubles, with Western winning the No. 1 spot and CU winning the No. 3 spot. The all-important "lone doubles point" was at stake and Cumberland, led by senior captain Edgar Galea and Moscow native Roman Shkurupiy, found a way to come from behind to win 9-7 at No. 2 doubles to claim a 1-0 lead overall. The Bulldogs quickly went up 3-0 when Swedish freshman Sebastian Jonsson and transfer Slava Glebov of Siberia both won in straight sets in singles.

Despite being up 3-0, the Bulldogs found themselves down on each of the other courts and had to dig deep in order to be a very talented Hilltopper team. Cumberland then lost at No. 1 singles and began to feel things slipping when sophomore Mike Basler of Switzerland mounted a huge come-from-behind win to seal the victory for the Bulldogs.

"This was a really big win for our guys, especially on the road against a really good Division I team like Western," Riddle added.

The Bulldogs take their 3-1 record on the road this week as they head south to face a tough Sewanee team indoors on Valentine's Day.
