Bulldogs finish second at TranSouth Conference Championship, Whitmer named 'Freshman of the Year'

Cumberland University recently claimed second place at the TranSouth Conference Championship, and CU's Austin Whitmer captured 'Freshman of the Year' honors.

After shooting 314 in the first round, the Bulldogs found themselves merely nine shots out of the lead after day one, but an unfortunate penalty found the Bulldogs in fifth place -- 22 shots out of first. To the team's credit and despite the adversity, the Bulldogs rallied on day two, shooting 293 to secure a second-place finish. The Bulldogs will be back in action April 28-29 at The Legacy in Springfield, Tenn., where they will host the 2008 NAIA Regional Championship.

Cumberland University recently received 15 votes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Poll, moving the team to just outside the Top 25 in the nation, according to CU Head Coach Scott Wilkerson.

The CU men's golf team has also rocketed to a No. 2 regional ranking, up from a last-place preseason ranking. The 'Dawgs are in second place behind Campbellsville University, currently ranked No. 14 in the country. The CU men will meet Campbellsville in the upcoming Region XI Tournament, which they will also host.

"We are really making some waves and, with a strong conference showing, we should make our way into the Top 25 without problems," Wilkerson said of the team.

Cumberland University shot a 313-294 to win the rain-soaked Red Hawk Classic at Henry Horton State Park in Chapel Hill, Tenn. by 10 shots. Benton Hart took home the low individual honors, and Austin Whitmer, Jonathon Drake and Josh Young made the all-tournament team.

"The guys really played solid despite the conditions. We've known all along that this group of young men were capable of putting together two solid rounds and winning. I can hardly wait until next year, and I believe we have some good things coming our way," said CU Assistant Coach Jim Griffin.

Head Coach Scott Wilkerson added, "I believe our team is coming together at just the right time. We have conference and regional tournaments still to play, but the hard work they have put in is starting to pay off. I am very proud of each and every one of our guys and their commitment. We have such a close group of players and as talented a group as I have ever coached."

The Cumberland University Men's Golf Team shot 299-298 to finish second at the Spring Invitational at Old Silo Golf Course in Mt. Sterling, Ky. Senior Jonathon Drake was named to the All-Tournament Team. According to Head Coach Scott Wilkerson, the second-place finish was "quite an accomplishment" as there were two nationally ranked teams in the field.

"This performance is a direct result of the hard work that was put in during the off-season and the commitment of the coaching staff and the University," Wilkerson said. "We are determined to make this program one of the best in the nation, and we see this as a sign of things to come."

The Cumberland University Men's Golf team finished third at the Union University Spring Invitational at Ross Creek in Clifton, Tenn. Only two shots stood between winning and third place during the tournament, and the CU team fought a good fight despite inclement weather. Three members of the CU team made the All-Tournament Team. Pictured are team members Ryan Guidry and Benton Hart, who made the All-Tournament Team along with low individual tournament winner Josh Young, who shot 71-70 to take that honor.
