First Season

Jay Joyner begins his first season as an assistant coach at Cumberland after spending the previous two years at Rutgers.

Joyner served as the Director of Player Development at Rutgers for two seasons, a role setup to ensure the personal progress of each Scarlet Knights student-athlete. His duties included scheduling personal and team peer exercises, scheduling student-athlete mentoring programs on and off campus, and assisting with the coordination and monitoring of individual player's daily schedules.

He was also involved with the video coordinator to enhance an individual's athletic performance, assisting in all basketball-related events on campus, monitoring study halls and coordinating student-athlete documentation as it relates to NCAA compliance.

The Amityville, N.Y., native has served in several administrative and coaching positions in college and high school basketball.

From 2003-05, Joyner served as an Administrative Assistant/Assistant Strength Coach at Tennessee State and was involved in a variety of day-to-day operations within the men's basketball program, including arranging home and away practice times, organizing team travel, coordinating film exchange, coaching clinics and monitoring academic progress. He also managed the strength and conditioning program for men's basketball at TSU.

He was the assistant boys varsity coach at Centennial High School in Franklin, Tenn., during the 2002-03 academic year.

A three-year letterwinner at South Carolina State in 1994-96, Joyner played professionally overseas, including a one-year stint with Canaria de la Laguna, a team based in the Canary Islands.

Joyner earned a bachelor's in Physical Education from Middle Tennessee in 2002. He and his wife, Chartarra, have three children.
