The School of Education and Public Service is proud of its long-held regional reputation for consistently preparing excellent practitioners for careers in their chosen fields. We share a commitment to staying ahead of changes in policy and practice to maintain our reputation for excellence, and to deliver an education based on best current practices and a research-based body of knowledge that enables our graduates to serve their constituencies and communities professionally.

The School of Education and Public Service's conceptual framework incorporates national standards for the development of new practitioners into our standing goal of preparing competent, caring, qualified professionals and reflective practitioners. (The full text of our Conceptual Framework.)
The School of Education at Cumberland University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs at Cumberland University. However, the accreditation does not include individual education courses that the institution offers to P-12 educators for professional development, re-licensure, or other purposes.
Many Cumberland students major in programs offered by the School of Education and Public Service. We offer five undergraduate and two graduate programs. Some of our programs prepare candidates for careers in the athletics, health and wellness fields; some of our programs lead to teacher and school administrator licensure, and one prepares candidates for careers in public service management.

Individuals currently holding a baccalaureate degree in another academic discipline may seek Tennessee licensure by completing a second baccalaureate through Cumberland University.

Undergraduate Programs:

We collaborate with the School of Music & the Arts to offer two degrees for those interested in becoming an Art or Music teacher:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts, Studio Art Emphasis*
  • Bachelor of Music, Music Education Emphasis*

 

NOTE: Cumberland Students interested in the Secondary Education dual major or in becoming an Art or Music teacher must see an advisor in the School of Music and the Arts or School of Liberal Arts and Science, and an advisor in the School of Education & Public Service, early and often while at Cumberland to ensure that they take the correct courses to be eligible for a Teacher's License. Candidates interested in any type of Tennessee Teacher's License must take certain General Education Core courses as part of their program.

Candidates pursuing degrees/minors should talk to an academic advisor early in their enrollment. Candidates may also choose one or more of the following minors:
