General Information About the Master of Arts in Education (Online)
The Master of Arts in Education (MAE) program is designed for individuals seeking an advanced professional degree in education focused on individual interest and professional growth. The program is designed for licensed teachers but may be appropriate for others interested in a practitioner-focused degree in education. Individuals interested in acquiring teacher licensure for the first time should enroll in the Master of Arts in Teaching program.
With Cumberland University’s online MAE program you will:

A variety of add-on endorsements may be added to current Tennessee teachers licenses with coursework and passing Praxis scores. Please contact Cumberland's certification officer for details.
Courses & Course Plan
The MAE degree program is comprised of 10 courses for a total of 30 credit hours. Students choose four courses from an advanced educator core, and choose the remaining six courses based on personal professional development goals. Elective courses may be chosen from a variety of programs across the institution, even coursework beyond our educator preparation program. You can meet with a faculty member to discuss your professional aspirations and choose coursework that will help you meet your individual goals.
Coursework is offered in a variety of formats, including entirely online courses, hybrid courses (combining online coursework with a limited number of in-class meetings), and traditional on-campus courses. Offering times for class meetings are designed to accommodate the busy schedules of working adults. An entirely online option is available.
Guided Electives - 18 hours
Choose six additional courses. These courses must be approved by a university academic advisor based on a professional development plan submitted by the candidate. These courses may be selected from any graduate-level program at the University with the exception of the Master of Education in Instructional Leadership and the Master of Science in Nursing.30 credit hours minimum required for graduation.
