Mission of the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences
In the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, students are exposed to ideas and information that will form the cornerstone for learning. By the systematic study of the social sciences, humanities, mathematics and the natural sciences, students reflect upon the history of their culture, examine political, social and ethical issues, and develop an understanding of the physical world. Through this process, students sharpen their powers of observation, analysis and evaluation. In addition, the curriculum enables students to develop communication skills, critical thinking skills and decision-making abilities.

The School of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Cumberland University boasts one of the only bachelor's degree programs in Criminal Justice in the region, including exciting courses in drug investigations, cyber forensics and cyber security. Cumberland’s integrated Math and Science Academy is the only one of its kind in the country. Our Humanities & Social Sciences program is one of the few in the Southeast. Additionally, our students enjoy a nearly 100 percent acceptance rate to medical, dental and pharmacy schools after graduation. You’ll find great preparation through the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
We offer seven majors and two degrees: the Bachelor of Arts (with majors in Criminal Justice, English, History and Humanities & Social Sciences) and the Bachelor of Science (with majors in Biology, Mathematics and Psychology). Students can also participate in our Teacher Education Program by partnering Liberal Arts and Sciences with the School of Education to earn a dual major in Secondary Education for licensure in one of several liberal arts content areas: Biology, Economics, English, Geography, Government, History, Mathematics, Psychology or Sociology. Teaching, Research and Service
Faculty members in the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences devote their time and energy primarily to preparation for and participation in the classroom. Interaction with students and stimulation of student learning is their highest priority.

Professional research is the also the call of school faculty members, who are encouraged to write professional articles and books and pursue post-graduate study. In addition, faculty members take seriously their call to serve others. Dr. Pete Peterson, professor of Biology, exemplifies this aspect of life in the Cumberland community by the many activities he supports in Lebanon and Nashville.
