The mission of the Associate of Arts in Business program is to educate students coming from diverse backgrounds in the fundamental skills, knowledge, and practice of general business to prepare them for entry-level administrative positions, the pursuit of entrepreneurial career opportunities, or continued education toward a bachelor’s degree in business or related disciplines.

The mission of the Business Administration program is to educate students coming from diverse backgrounds in the fundamental skills, knowledge, and practice of general business in order to prepare them for managerial, professional, or administrative positions in service and/or manufacturing industries as well as to pursue entrepreneurial career opportunities or advanced degrees in business or related disciplines.

You’ll study business policy, international business, logistics and manufacturing to prepare you to manage people, processes and information.

The mission of the Marketing program is to provide students a strong foundation in general business content and a specialized focus in Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Consumer (B2C) marketing content through experiential learning as well as to equip students for meaningful contributions within their business careers.Within the coursework, students will engage in creative thought, critical thinking, and real world case study involvement. Graduates of the marketing program will be highly capable of achieving their professional goals while meeting the needs, wants, and desires of employers, customers, and society.

The Instructional Leadership (Non-Licensure) concentration is designed around a curriculum that is focused on the preparation of instructional coaches and teacher leadership positions. The concentration of coursework will utilize best practices for math and language literacy interventions to help current teachers bring evidence-based practices into the 21st century classroom. In addition, an emphasis will be placed on understanding student and teacher assessment data as it relates to planning interventions for student improvement. Courses focus on the power of reflective practice, building leadership skills, problem-based coaching models, and strategies to build a strong professional learning community. The program is also open to any licensed teacher interested in further professional development in a skill set required for professional advancement. All candidate applicants must hold a current Teacher’s License.

The Physical Education and Athletic Coaching program strives to promote active participation of individuals in sport and physical activity across the life span. The department prepares future professionals for careers in fitness and wellness, physical education, strength and conditioning. Other careers that individuals who graduate in this field are prepared to work are sports management and recreation. Physical Educators and Athletic Coaches in the schools touch several hundred youth each year and thousands of individuals over the course of his/her career.

The mission of the Secondary Education dual major program is to enhance each candidate’s in-depth content knowledge obtained from their primary major with the pedagogical skills necessary to meet the academic and developmental needs of all students in grades 6-12. The Secondary Education Dual Major program has been designed with input from current practitioner partners and in response to the call for more rigorous preparation in academic disciplines for secondary education teachers. The program has been specifically designed to ensure graduating teacher candidates will meet the academic and developmental needs of all students during their first year teaching and thereafter. Candidates seeking a license to teach an academic subject in grades 6-12 must dual major in the subject area they wish to teach and Secondary Education. Candidates for teacher licensure must work with two advisors: a content advisor in their program and an education advisor in the School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts. Candidates must seek guidance early and often to ensure enrollment in the required courses in a timely manner. Students in this program must be admitted to STEPP to be considered a licensure candidate, and must meet STEPP requirements at key checkpoints in their program. Candidates for Art teacher licensure should work with an art advisor and an education advisor to ensure appropriate course selection. Please review courses of study carefully and work with advisors early and often to plan course selection. Candidates have few or no elective courses available, so advisor consultation in both areas is especially important. The School of Humanities, Education, & the Arts has specific GEC and grade requirements.

It is highly recommended that students intending to major in music, have studied voice or an instrument with a qualified teacher. Audition with Music Faculty prior to admission to the AA in Mus. and B.Mus. degrees. Admission to the University Ensembles and eligibility for scholarships for music majors, minors, and students of other majors is by audition only.

The mission of the Theatre program is to prepare students for a career in the theatrical arts as an actor or director; to prepare students for graduate study in the theatrical arts; to use the theatrical arts as an avocation; or to use related theatrical skills as an adjunct to other professional careers. Theatre courses provide students a philosophical and historical appreciation of dramatic art and literature as an integral part of world culture. The Theatre program is designed to accomplish the following: produce a highly literate, well-read individual who possesses the knowledge of many diverse subject areas; permit the student to obtain a working knowledge of specific theatrical data and skills for subsequent academic or professional career pursuits; and prepare the student for active participation in live performance experiences through the university theatrical productions.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in General Studies allows students to develop a wide range of interests and talents within the academic setting. Students need to pay careful attention to upper level prerequisites as well as a cohesive plan of work. Internships are encouraged to help provide focus to the student’s overall plan.

The mission of the Kinesiology program is to develop knowledge, personal dispositions, and practical applications through the interdisciplinary study of human movement and physical activity.

The Master of Public Service Management (MSP) degree is offered as a part of Cumberland University’s institutional outreach to provide opportunities for advanced study in fields appropriate to the needs of the community. The program seeks to provide individuals who have attained the baccalaureate degree, in any field, with an opportunity to acquire advanced expertise while continuing to work full-time during the period of enrollment. The program of study was instituted in 1996 with the first graduates receiving the Master of Public Service Management degree at the May, 1998, graduation. Enrollment in the M.S.P. degree program is limited. Students who enter the two-year program will attend classes for 5 consecutive semesters, usually sequenced fall-spring-summer-fall-spring. Primarily, students are admitted for the incoming class during the fall semester, but other admitted students may become part of the program on a space available basis in other terms.

The mission of the Mathematics program is to provide each student a solid foundation in several core branches of mathematics (calculus, analysis, and algebra) and to prepare students to apply quantitative and abstract reasoning skills in advanced degree programs and/or careers requiring expertise in mathematics. Students majoring in Mathematics must take MATH 121 to satisfy the General Education Core (GEC) requirement in mathematics. Students whose mathematical background is insufficient for MATH 121 may take MATH 111 and MATH 119 as general electives. However, these courses cannot be used as part of the major. Students majoring in mathematics are encouraged to choose general elective courses so that a minor in a related field is completed. Students interested in mathematics teacher licensure must complete this program of study and the Secondary Education dual major. Candidates should work with an advisor in mathematics and an advisor from the School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts early and often to ensure enrollment in the required courses. Classroom Management (ED 432) and Applied Methods and Concepts (ED 433) must be taken the semester prior to student teaching.
